quranic verse

Post by hpatel »

can someone please explain this quranic verse
[2.228] And the divorced women should keep themselves in waiting for three courses; and it is not lawful for them that they should conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the last day; and their husbands have a better right to take them back in the meanwhile if they wish for reconciliation; and they have rights similar to those against them in a just manner, and the men are a degree above them, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.
what are the "the three courses" in this case?

My understanding is she has to wait 3 months before getting re-married to make sure she is not pregnant by her past husband. If she is, maybe she will get back into wedding with her previous husband for the sake of the child. Or maybe the divorce is then cancelled. This is just one interpretation...

The Arabic "Qurao" refers to menstruation - so three courses of menstruation to establish without doubt if the wife has undergone any conception by her husband in order to establish parentage. The waiting period is one during which there is also hope for reconciliation. Further, 2:232 protects the rights of the woman to exercise her will independently and prohibts her family or guardian from obstructing her from returning to her ex-husband even after the waiting period if they both agree to reunite in marriage.
