The University of Michigan welcomed Princess Zahra Aga Khan and representatives from Aga Khan University‘s campuses in Pakistan and Kenya on Oct. 30.

Senior leadership from both universities formally signed a memorandum of understanding to expand ongoing collaborative efforts.

“Partnership is powerful,” Princess Zahra Aga Khan said. “The AKU/U-M Collaborative Platform for Improving Health builds on what is already a highly successful partnership between two institutions with common values and unique strengths. I look forward to seeing our faculty members continue to work together to deliver new tools and insights that can improve health in Africa, Asia and beyond.”

Princess Khan is the daughter of the Aga Khan, a spiritual leader (Imam) of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. The U-M Center for Global Health Equity organized the delegation’s visit.

“The visit of Princess Zahra Aga Khan and the distinguished AKU delegation is a testament to the enduring bond between our institutions, founded on shared values and a common vision for a better world,” said U-M President Santa Ono. “This historic celebration is not only an opportunity to honor our past achievements but to set a course for an even brighter future of partnership and collaboration.”

The visit builds on a collaborative effort to use data science to improve health outcomes in under-resourced settings in sub-Saharan Africa that started in 2019 and was formalized with a signed Memorandum of Understanding in 2021. Their joint efforts have already yielded significant strides in strengthening health systems, informing health policy, utilizing technology to promote health equity and empowering women.

In the early stages of the formal partnership, U-M and AKU joined together to launch the UZIMA-DS data hub. This Kenyan-led initiative is developing a scalable and sustainable platform to apply novel data assimilation and advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning-based tools to address two pressing health issues among African youth: poor health outcomes in mothers and children, and depression and suicide ideation among adolescents and young adults.

UZIMA-DS, or the Utilizing Health Information for Meaningful Impact in East Africa through Data Science program, aims to empower African researchers by providing them with the necessary support, resources and training to further their efforts in enhancing the health and well-being of people throughout the African continent. Funded by a $6.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, the initiative is now in its third year and recently received a second NIH grant to leverage AI models to improve colorectal cancer diagnoses in Africa.

Since UZIMA’s launch, the AKU/U-M partnership has expanded to include several other large, population-level research initiatives, including the Longitudinal Study of Health and Aging in Kenya.

“As we witness the evolution of our partnership, it becomes clear that this collaboration is being led by African researchers, who are taking the lead in addressing the pressing health challenges within their own communities,” said Joe Kolars, director of the U-M Center for Global Health Equity.

The AKU delegation included Princess Zahra Aga Khan; Sulaiman Shahabuddin, president; Carl Amrhein, provost; Salim Virani, vice provost for research and graduate studies; Zahra Somani, chief advancement officer; Shaukat Ali Khan, global chief innovation officer; Amina Abubakar, director of the Institute of Human Development; and Fareena Feroze, director of global engagement.

AKU Board of Trustees confident of the University’s growth

Image

Dec 5, 2023

Distinguished leaders from Asia, Africa, Europe and North America assembled this week at Aga Khan University’s (AKU) Stadium Road campus as the University’s Board of Trustees met in Karachi for the first time since the start of the pandemic. The presence of Princess Zahra Aga Khan and other globally eminent leaders from academia, health care, finance and law strikes a hopeful note and signals AKU’s unshakeable commitment to Pakistan.

The 13 members of AKU’s Board of Trustees are appointed by AKU’s Chancellor, His Highness the Aga Khan. They include current and former leaders of institutions such as Habib Bank, Standard Chartered, Columbia University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Pennsylvania, Wake Forest University, the University of Calgary, and the Supreme Court of Tanzania.

“Throughout its four-decade journey, the vigilance, foresight and integrity of the Board of Trustees has been one of the University’s most valuable assets,” President Sulaiman Shahabuddin said. “The wise counsel and strategic guidance they have provided have enabled AKU to navigate changes in higher education, health care, technology, politics, the economy, and more. They have shaped its evolution and made AKU the university it is today.”

In Pakistan, AKU has awarded 14,500 diplomas and degrees in the health care and educational development sectors. These will be accompanied soon by degrees from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which AKU opened earlier this year. The University’s Hospital cares for 1.4 million patients annually and provides US$ 21.1 million (PKR 4.3 billion) in patient welfare annually to make world-class care – including surgeries and other advanced procedures and diagnostics – available to low-income patients. During last year’s floods, it established medical camps in flood-affected communities across Pakistan and provided free basic health services to more than 400,000 people.

Representatives of the Government of Sindh, diplomats, AKU donors and partners and representatives of Pakistan’s business and legal communities joined AKU’s senior leadership at a dinner Thursday evening in honour of the Trustees. Princess Zahra Aga Khan paid tribute to the contributions of her fellow Board members and the University’s supporters and senior leaders, thanking them on behalf of His Highness the Aga Khan for “fueling AKU’s ascent to new heights of distinction and impact.”

“AKU’s success is above all due to the vision and generosity of His Highness the Aga Khan,” said Chairman of the Board of Trustees Zakir Mahmood. “It is an honour for the Board to have the opportunity to help to fulfill that vision alongside the diverse members of the AKU community around the world.”

“As AKU celebrates its 40th anniversary, it possesses a greater capacity for impact in a greater number of fields and geographies than ever before,” Trustee Naguib Kheraj said. “Our goal is to ensure that it continues to thrive and to respond to the challenges faced by the people it serves in an era of accelerating change and significant uncertainty.”

“As a nursing scholar and leader, it has been deeply satisfying to witness and contribute to the evolution of AKU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery,” said Trustee Afaf Meleis. “Its contribution to nursing in Pakistan and beyond is only one element of the University’s impact, but it is a powerful demonstration of what it can achieve.”

Princess Zahra offered a preview of a new report by a commission of globally eminent leaders from academia and other fields handpicked by His Highness the Aga Khan to develop recommendations that can guide AKU’s evolution in the years ahead. She noted the Commissioners’ optimism that AKU “will continue to thrive and contribute to a more peaceful, prosperous, and pluralist world in the decades ahead.” Echoing that optimism, she said: “With the continued guidance of its Chancellor, the wise oversight of its Trustees, the deft management of its senior leaders, and the generous support of its friends, AKU will continue to stand as a creative source of education and enlightenment in the decades ahead.”

“That AKU has been able to achieve so much across its four decades is above all thanks to its founder, Chancellor and chief benefactor, His Highness the Aga Khan,” said Dr Shahabuddin.“His Highness’s vision continues to guide us and continually inspire us with the strength to make bold decisions that keep AKU at the forefront of innovation, quality and impact.”AKU celebrated its 40th anniversary On March 16, 2023. All stories are not about Princess Zahra. This post is about the future of AKU and would therefore be more appropriate for the thread: AKU set to expand.

Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa upgraded to better serve 1.2m

Kenya · 20 February 2024

Mombasa, Kenya, 18 February 2024 – Completed renovation of the Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa marks a milestone in its ongoing commitment to provide quality health care to a population of nearly 1.2 million people. The refurbishment has transformed the 86-bed facility into a state-of-the-art 115-bed secondary hospital, offering comprehensive, integrated health services to the communities it serves.

The renovation project represents a total investment of $12.2 million, with significant support from Agence Française de Développement (AFD).

Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Chair of the Executive Committee of the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), and Mr Bertrand Willocquet, Country Director of AFD, visited the hospital today and expressed their satisfaction with the renovation and the enhanced capacity it has brought about.

Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa, with its outreach centres, stands as the premier healthcare service provider in the coastal region, consistently expanding its reach and diversifying services to meet the evolving needs of the community. Since the inauguration of a 4-bed maternity home in the Ganjoni area of Mombasa in 1944, the integrated health network has grown into a central hub serving over five counties in the region through purpose-built facilities and highly skilled doctors and nurses committed to delivering quality care.

The hospital has been awarded the prestigious SafeCare Level 5 certification, an international benchmark for safe and quality patient care. It is the first AKHS hospital in Kenya to achieve such accreditation, with eight of its outreach health centres also attaining the highest level of SafeCare certification – Level 5.

The newly renovated Aga Khan Hospital, Mombasa is poised to provide enhanced healthcare services to the people of the coastal region and Kenya at large. The facility now features a dedicated Accidents and Emergency Unit, a larger Intensive Care Unit, the region's first private-sector Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the inaugural Sleep Lab utilising cutting-edge technology for diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Holding Level 5 certification from SafeCare Health Standards, the hospital is well-equipped to offer specialised care in cardiology, oncology, neurology, psychiatry, advanced surgeries, and more.
