Our bending is of gladness in the archers hand to us
He loves the arrow that flies, the bow so stable for us
The archer sees the mark upon the path for us
Bends it with his might, the arrow goes far for us
The name of Sinan brings the memory of
Aleppo and Masyaf to us
His philosophy as dai forever imprinted on us
The balance of the zahir and batin as it come to us
A reciprocal social relationship of balance within us
Weaving a tapestry of din-dunia
In this our Diamond Jubilee year, your birth bring to us
Great tidings of gladness and joy within us

The IIS commemorates its 40th anniversary with guest of honour Prince Rahim Aga Khan
On 25 November 1977, His Highness the Aga Khan officially inaugurated The Institute of Ismaili Studies. To mark this momentous anniversary, the Board of Governors hosted a celebration for staff, visiting faculty and students on Friday 24 November, with Prince Rahim Aga Khan in attendance. The event celebrated the role of the people who have contributed to developing an academic centre for Ismaili studies, that has had a significant impact on the field of Shi‘i and Ismaili studies in the last 40 years.
During the celebration, Prince Rahim thanked members of staff, for their contributions to the work of the Institute, and their commitment to His Highness’ vision. He remarked that this was a momentous day, where we should reflect on the Institute’s progress and achievements, and celebrate the people who have made this possible. He further commented on how the students are the life blood of the Institute and our future leaders. Reflecting on the formation of IIS, Prince Rahim considered how it was prescient and timely. He said that we have been dealing with the globalisation of the Jamat and its patterns of migration, which has made it even more important to be able to provide the Jamat with authentic, and well-prepared materials to enable an understanding of its history and heritage, and of matters of faith and practice. Prince Rahim noted that IIS is a unique institution which has been breaking new ground and has created something which doesn’t exist elsewhere.
Prince Rahim also congratulated and recognised long-serving members of staff, who have been employed by the Institute for 20 years or more – including Mr Shams Vellani, who has been with the Institute since it was founded.
Other staff members who have been with the Institute for over 20 years, and were recognised included: Dr Jalal Badakhchani - 27 years; Rita Bishop - 20 years; Dr Farhad Daftary - 29 years; Dr Aziz Esmail - 29 years; Joy Johnson - 27 years; Kutub Kassam - 34 years; Khadija Lalani - 28 years; Hadi Mirshahi - 24 years; Alnoor Nathani - 23 years; Shamim Salaam - 22 years; Anna Spinola - 33 years and Dr Shiraz Thobani - 34 years.
Since its establishment in 1977 - with six members of staff - the IIS has seen significant growth and now employs over 115 people.
The library was one of the first endeavours of the IIS, and has established itself as a central repository and resource for Ismaili and Islamic Studies. Over time, the collection has grown to hold 42,000 volumes and has been entrusted with the collections of eminent Islamic Studies scholars, such as Professors Mohammed Arkoun and Anne-Marie Schimmel, Dr Zahid Ali and Muhammad Ali Hamdani. More recently Dr Daftary, has generously pledged his entire personal collection ofover 5000 books, to the library.
The IIS published its first book, Henri Corbin’s Cyclical Time and Ismaili Gnosis, in 1983. To date, the Institute has produced 138 publications and translated many titles into French, Arabic, Persian, Portuguese and Russian. It has also developed and published a series of religious education curriculum for the Ismaili community – for pre-school to secondary school aged children. The IIS secondary curriculum modules have been published in 10 languages and are currently being used in 25 countries.
Preservation and study of Ismaili heritage has been integral to the work of the IIS since the beginning. In its care is one of the most significant repositories of materials related to Ismaili communities in the world. Over 3,000 manuscripts are held in the Ismaili special collections, including one of the oldest Ismaili manuscripts in the world from the 14th century.
Another aspect of the mandate of the organisation is the development of people. Since 2001, over 3,000 people have participated in professional development and education programmes led by the IIS, such as Leadership Orientation Programmes for the Jamat, Waezeen Training and the Summer Programme on Islam. In addition, over 550 people have graduated from programmes offered by the IIS, including 240 students from the Secondary Teacher Education Programme and 223 from Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities. The Institute has awarded 45 doctoral scholarships since 1997.
Achieving success is always a challenging endeavour. For IIS, building on that success, into the next decades may be as demanding as it has been for the first four decades of its life. However, this is now the task ahead for everyone who is engaged with the future of the Institute.

Prince Rahim said that Institute of Ismaili Studies provides to the community original and authentic material regarding the Ismaili Muslim faith and practices. (Foundational are Farmans -guidance - of and from Imams , and the Hazar Imam, including the Ismaili constitution)
Prince Rahim “said that we have been dealing with the globalisation of the Jamat and its patterns of migration, which has made it even more important to be able “to provide the Jamat with authentic, and well-prepared materials to enable an understanding of its history and heritage, and of matters of faith and practice”
Having reliable and authentic facts, understanding and sharing them is critical to increasing understanding and reducing misinformation and misperceptions. This is also what Hazar Imam has said.
The above event was by invitation, and held at The 5 Star Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge London. Long serving staff and those who contributed to IIS were given recognition.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center on Tuesday formally announced a goal to collaborate on global health programs with Aga Khan University, which operates medical schools and hospitals throughout the developing world.
Dr. Gary Gilliland, president and director of Fred Hutch, and Firoz Rasul, president of Aga Khan University, signed a memorandum of understanding on March 5 outlining their intentions to develop a five-year relationship to advance cancer research and training and help build an improved medical infrastructure.
As outlined in the memorandum, the Hutch’s Global Oncology Program would work with Aga Khan University on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and related diseases, with a focus on Africa, where the Hutch has research laboratories in Kampala, Uganda and Cape Town, South Africa.
“The vision we share is to see how we can improve outcomes for cancer globally,” said Gilliland at the Hutch campus, as he welcomed dignitaries including Prince Rahim Aga Khan and his wife, Princess Salwa.
“We must work together to enable this vision, as the global impact of cancer continues to increase. That is the extraordinary value of our collaboration with Aga Khan University. Together we can make an enormous difference in the burgeoning global cancer problem,” Gilliland said.
Prince Rahim is the eldest son of His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, a culturally diverse community of 15 million living in 25 countries. The Aga Khan is founder of the Aga Khan Development Network, which is known for establishing universities, schools, hospitals, housing and economic development programs in resource-poor regions.
Founded by its namesake, The Aga Khan University is a private, nonprofit organization that operates schools in six countries — Afghanistan, Kenya, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda and the United Kingdom. It supports medical centers that annually treat more than 2 million people.
“Hope,” said Gilliland, “is something that motivates us every day at the Hutch. We must assure that patients have hope, and that they have access.” He praised Aga Khan University for its “deep, extensive experience” in ensuring access to care in the countries where it provides health services.
Aga Khan University President Rasul has run the multinational institution since 2006. He said that both the university and Fred Hutch shared something rare in global health: “We are institution-builders.”
'Moments in the life of an institution when all the stars align'
In Kampala, his organization is building a new Aga Khan University Hospital on 60 acres granted to it by the Ugandan government. Rasul said the university has been devoted to diversity and helping the disadvantaged. Half of its graduates were the first in their family to attend a university. Two-thirds of today’s students are women, as are more than half of its medical students.
He said partnerships like this one with Fred Hutch were needed, because cancer kills more people in the developing world than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. “There are moments in the life of an institution when all the stars align, everything slides into place, and you feel certain you are on the right path. This is one of those moments,” he said.
Prior to the signing ceremony, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa took a tour of the Hutch laboratory of Dr. Stanley Riddell, scientific director of the Hutch’s Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center. No stranger to the Pacific Northwest, Princess Salwa is a Seattle native and a graduate of the University of Washington.
Transforming our understanding of cancers in Africa
The couple also visited the lab of Dr. Hootie Warren, head of the Hutch’s Global Oncology Program. There, Dr. Manoj Menon described several research initiatives underway in Uganda, including a clinical study for breast cancer.
One study is testing the feasibility of a three-drug chemotherapy regimen that patients will be able to take orally — a more practical formulation than intravenous infusions that are difficult to manage in resource-poor settings. The program is also evaluating the use of PCR, a diagnostic tool readily available in Africa for the management of HIV, to determine whether molecules on the surface of the breast cancer tumors were susceptible to certain drugs — information regularly used to determine treatment options in the U.S.
Warren told the gathering that the African population of 1.4 billion is expected to rise to 4.2 billion by the end of this century. He suggested that advanced technologies, such as single-cell analysis of tumor samples — a cutting-edge technique now used in the United States — could help transform our understanding of cancers in Africa. He also praised the emerging capability of the UCI-Fred Hutch Cancer Centre, the Kampala laboratory jointly operated by the Hutch and the Uganda Cancer Institute — to sequence the entire genomes of tumor samples using recently installed instruments.
“From our footprint in Kampala, and hopefully along with Aga Khan University, we will generate advances that can change lives and cure cancers for millions of people,” Warren said.

Prince Rahim visits East Africa to evaluate AKDN’s response to environmental sustainability and climate change
PHOTOS BELOW THE ARTICLE
In early March, Prince Rahim, accompanied by his wife, Princess Salwa, visited Kenya and Tanzania, to better understand the plans and responses of the various institutions and agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) towards environmental sustainability and climate action.
Prince Rahim’s visit to Kenya took place in his capacity as Chair of the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee (ECC), which was recently established to develop a policy framework on priorities related to the environment and climate change for implementation by AKDN globally.
During their 6-day visit to Kenya, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa visited a number of AKDN institutions and projects to learn more about what each is doing to mitigate environmental degradation through specific interventions such as adopting renewable energy, harvesting rainwater, recycling waste, and planting trees.
At the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa met with administrators, faculty and students, where they heard about the school’s initiatives to integrate knowledge on the environment and climate into the curriculum as well as about student projects focusing on finding solutions to the challenge of environmental degradation and climate change.
In Nairobi, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa visited a number of companies that comprise Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), the part of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) focusing on infrastructure and industrial development. These included Farmer’s Choice, Frigoken and Allpack Industries.
In Murang’a County, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa saw how Frigoken – an IPS agro-industrial company working with farmers to add value to their products – has partnered with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) to introduce climate change adaptation measures to help small-scale farmers, including water pans for harvesting rainwater, drip irrigation, agroforestry and composting.
In Nairobi, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa were shown how Allpack Industries, an IPS company that manufactures corrugated cardboard, has introduced a biomass boiler, as well as a 560KW solar power unit, among other interventions, to enhance energy efficiency, reduce water use and improve on industrial waste management.
While at the Nation Media Group’s state-of-the-art printing plant, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa were taken through measures that the media house has put into place to reduce energy consumption, improve industrial waste management and enhance safety on site. They also learned about NMG’s tree planting, awareness raising, and community engagement activities.
The Prince and Princess also visited Serena Hotel Nairobi, part of the Tourism Promotion Services (TPS) division of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). Among other environmental initiatives, Serena Hotels have introduced solar power generation capacity at many of their safari lodges in Kenya.
At the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, the visitors were shown plans for the new 12-storey University Centre, the Specialty Children’s Hospital and the proposed University Hospital in Kampala. Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa also made a day trip to Arusha, Tanzania to see AKU’s land there and to learn about the university’s community outreach initiatives including its agricultural demonstration plots aimed at teaching local farmers about innovative agricultural techniques. Discussions with AKU in Nairobi and Arusha centred on environmental sustainability initiatives and the energy efficiency and environment-friendly strategies that the university is aiming to put in place for its upcoming projects.
In Nakuru County, Prince Rahim and Princess Salwa visited KenGen’s Olkaria Geothermal Power Station near Naivasha — the oldest and largest geothermal power station in Africa — where they received a tour of the facility and a presentation on the importance of geothermal power as part of Kenya’s overall energy mix.
On Monday 9 March, Prince Rahim chaired a Roundtable with AKDN agencies and key external stakeholders and partners in the environmental field to discuss progress and the potential for enhanced partnerships and joint action.
The Roundtable, which was held at the historic Town Jamatkhana (Khoja Mosque), was attended by members of the AKDN Environment and Climate Committee (ECC): Princess Salwa, Dr Paul Dhalla and Mr Lutaf Kassam. Also in attendance were the Diplomatic Representative of the Aga Khan Development Network in Kenya, Dr Azim Lakhani and other senior leadership from AKDN agencies in Kenya. Representatives from various other organisations also participated, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the Trillion Trees initiative and Global Wildlife Conservancy.
Key objectives of the Roundtable included learning about the initiatives of AKDN and its partners around environmental sustainability; challenges encountered and lessons learned from the implementation of these initiatives; and exploring possibilities for enhanced collaboration between AKDN and its partners aimed at developing practical and feasible programmes likely to have a positive impact.
Significant outcomes from the discussions included a commitment to enhancing joint efforts to collaborate on raising awareness about climate change and to mitigate risks; scaling up existing sustainability initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption; developing climate mitigation strategies and metrics, as well as nature-based solutions to offset carbon emissions throughout AKDN.

MY ENCOUNTER WITH HIS HIGHNESS PRINCE KARIM AGA KHAN : One of the most humbling experiences in my life!
Over the many years that I worked in the tourism industry, I had the privilege of meeting folks from different walks of life and a host of nationalities. Indeed, if there is a thing I miss from my days as a tour guide it is meeting people.
Some time towards the end of December 2005, I was called by the GM of Serena Inn, Stone Town. "Chief, why don't you pass by, I may have some 'VIP' clients for you" , so I went and was given the proposed itinerary, without the names of the VIPs in question being revealed to me, and being a 'VIP Guide' myself, I told the GM, well, let me check my schedule and see if I have time.
The next day I had a prince completely vested in my hands to show him and his 3 friends my beautiful Zanzibar. Prince Rahim Aga Khan(seated with me in the photo) the elder son of HH Prince Karim Aga Khan. The 'dude' was so down to earth and too kind, I had to ask the GM if he was sure that indeed, I was hanging around Stone Town, spice tour, Mangapwani beach and safari blue with a prince? "Yes" , he said. I remember us boarding a boat from Mangapwani back to Stone Town and I was last to board after ensuring that my guests were on board and all set. It was myhturn to board and I could not believe my eyes : prince Rahim stood and extended his right hand to give me a hand and his left hand to help take my SHOES on board. Now, I was even more confused.... is this dude really a prince? In the days to come they would invite me for meals, which I politely declined, to give them some space and privacy until on the last day (when my trick to object joining breakfast) sort of backfired, "are we not good enough for you?" , at which point I obliged.
Long story short, Prince Rahim and I exchanged emails, such a good idea because I proved that he was indeed from the Aga Khan family from his email address so we kept in touch and he often asked about my family and my academic progress.
Sometime in 2006, my friend Rahim sent an email informing me that he would be in Zanzibar later that year or early 2007 and when the day was closer he sent another email asking if I had time to come over to Serena for coffee? Well, yeah, my answer was sort of I am not sure I will free but I will make time. Of course I knew I was going to be free and anyway, the Serena Inn was going to book and block me for the duration of VIPs sejourn in Zanzibar.
Soo, the highly anticipated coffee time came and I went to see my friend at Serena Inn, there at the reception, I asked for Prince Rahim room number and nobody dared tell me even though I said I had an appointment with him, so a staff member who knew well about my friendship with the prince told me he was sitting by the pool and so I walked by the extremities of the pool as if I knew nothing and in no time the prince spotted me and called me out loud "hey Masoud, come over."
OMG, there he was seated next to his father, just like any father-son chill by the pool, only that his father, the man whose blessed hands I was about to shake was His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, Imam, 49th Aga Khan, business leader and a great philanthropist. Was I dreaming? Maybe yes, maybe not.
The big shock..............
As I made only about two steps in the direction of HH and was at about 20 meters away from them, Prince Rahim whispered something to his dad and he His Highness, yes, HH Aga Khan stood up straight and still waiting to meet this skinny kid from Zanzibar with no big name or background whatsoever. That moment marked me. His humility left me humbled and forever changed my attitude towards rich people. You remove the 'rich' off their faces and they are just people, human beings. After polite greetings were exchanged me and my friend pulled our chairs aside to sip some fresh juices and coffee and let his dad enjoy the sundowner with other members of the family and soon after sunset His Highness came to me to excuse himself that he was going to his room and to whish me a nice evening. Wow!
Well, I have probably left a big part of this story untold and I rarely tell people, even members of the Ismaili community about this story but today (actually yesterday) 11th July, 2017 marks the beginning of the commemoration of HH jubilee (60th) , he took over the Imamat at age 20 in 1957 and has done impressive works to improve lives around the world. So as a person who has seen this great leader up close and interacted with him and his family, I wanted to take a moment to congratulate him and his over 25 million followers world wide on this milestone.
May he live longer and continue to advocate for greater understanding and tolerance among civilization. Ameen.
