How have you found sanctuary during the COVID-19 lockdown?
Calling all art lovers: the Aga Khan Museum invites you help create a new art display charting how people in our community have found sanctuary during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We warmly welcome you to send us a photograph or short video (15 seconds or less) that speaks to what — and who — gave you comfort, stability, belonging, and hope during this challenging time. Please include a short testimonial or poem (of 25 words or less) about the sanctuary represented in your photo or video.
Your sanctuary doesn’t have to be a place. It could be an activity, a cherished memory, a work of art, your faith, or something else entirely. We also encourage you to submit a picture of yourself with a person who has given you sanctuary during this time. When snapping your picture, make sure to respect physical-distancing rules, so you and others stay safe!
Our Museum team will collect the entries and create a display to feature in our Museum. This new collection of community-generated art will serve as a companion to the Sanctuary exhibition when the Museum reopens later this year.

Raag-Mala Toronto and the Museum present Pandit Satish Vyas, one of India’s most acclaimed santoor players, and Ustad Waseem Ahmed Khan, a powerful vocalist and descendant of the Agra Gharana musical lineage. Joined by Pandit Ashis Sengupta on tabla and Dr. Vinay Mishra on harmonium, they will perform a program of evening raags — improvisations based on musical scales that serve as the lifeblood of Indian classical music and have no traditional western equivalent.

It was through her travels in Greece, Turkey and Lebanon that she met renowned masters of classical Arabic and Turkish music, where she deepened her knowledge and interpretation of the Muwashah and Türk Sanat Müziği. Collaborating with unparalleled musicians from diverse cultures on Canadian stages, she shares these repertoires of the school of Maqamat from the regions of the Levent. Since 2013, Lamia and her ensemble have been traveling between the Maisons de la Culture in Montreal, various festivals accross Canada (Vancouver Island Festival, Caravan World Rythms, Sunfest, Accès Asie, Maison de la Syria, Festival du Monde Arabe, Festival des Traditions du monde de Sherbrooke , etc.) as well as in the Netherlands and Turkey. Her recent album Chants des Trois cours, with her guest musicians, was selected by the British magazine Songlines (March 2020), as one of the ten best new album releases.

On Tuesday April 7th, Fethi Nadjem was to present his trio (Marito Marques, Majd Sekkar) at the Canadian Opera Company's Richard Bradshaw Ampitheatre as part of their Free Concert Series, for which the Aga Khan Museum is a programming partner for 2019-2020. While the concert needed to be cancelled, the three artists have come together here, to present a special and unique snapshot of their work together as an ensemble, performing music from North Africa.

Aqua the singer, songwriter, storyteller, artist, and activist is a strong Anishinaabe Kwe~Indigenous Woman, also known as Nibii Waawaaskone~Water Flower. She originates from North Bay where she was raised by her single Mom Waabishkaasin Kwe~White Stone Woman. Aqua is a two-spirit woman of mixed Ancestry; Ojibwe Métis with French and Scottish heritage.

Dear Friend,
We’re all living under a new normal, but a better, kinder, more connected way now feels within reach – we need only to imagine it.
Here at the Aga Khan Museum, our team is working hard to reimagine what that new way forward looks like. We’ve adapted our programming to better reflect our new normal and to ensure our visitors are able to safely reconnect after too long in isolation.
We're so pleased that the Museum reopened on June 27th. But we need your help to make sure we can provide all the inspiring and restorative programming we have planned for you.
If you are able, could you consider a gift of $50 or $100 to help us provide programming that will spark healing and joy, and foster connection when we all need it most?
Every dollar raised between now and August 11 will be matched, up to a total of $40,000, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Kumi and Abdul Pirbhai, Bayview Hospitality Group, Jim Fleck, and an anonymous donor.
We have big plans for our new programming, aptly titled “Rebuild 2020,” anchored on themes that include: Remember, Reconnect, Reimagine and Rejoice.
Your gift today will:
- Give people a meaningful outlet to remember and pay tribute to essential workers and those we’ve lost, through four arts-based community projects
- Provide a safe place for people to reconnect by hosting community picnics on our extensive grounds
- Host a series of online talks where renowned artists tackle the question: “How do we reimagine the world in the wake of such change and what is the role of art and artists?”
- Give people the chance to rejoice and experience live performances for the first time in months.
I know it seems ambitious, but we strongly believe that our Museum has a pivotal role to play in reigniting a sense of wonder among our audiences — from young and old, local to global.
That’s why we’re calling this donations campaign “Reignite” — and we can’t do that without you.
Ultimately, our hope is that these new initiatives will bring people to the Museum, help them to experience the joy of art and encourage them to discover the diverse global flavours of Islamic art and culture.

The Canadian Youth Chinese Orchestra (CYCO) was formed in 2017 by a group of youths who represented the City of Markham to tour in China. Led by Amely Zhou, the conductor of CYCO, the group has since been invited to give concert performances at numerous prestigous venues, including the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, the Markham Theatre, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Sony Centre for Performing Arts. CYCO has collaborated with cultural organizations including the Fetechinoise, the Chinese Cultural Centre, and the Canadian Sinfonietta Youth Orchestra.

In Toronto, her contributions to the Middle Easterna nd Flamenco music communities have been numerous, having performed and worked through multiple projects, including Flamenco Arabia, which fuese traditional Arabic music with classic flamenco music cante and dance.

Behind the Scenes: Jeremy Dutcher at the Aga Khan Museum
The Aga Khan Museum has played a small but influential role in the rise of JUNO and Polaris award-winning musician Jeremy Dutcher. Celebrating Indigenous elders and stories, his first-ever music video, for the song “Mehcinut,” was shot at the Museum. Months later, in early 2020, Dutcher and his band embarked on a short residency here, experimenting with sonic structures and performing a quirky “living room-style" concert for a gathering of lucky fans.

I am overjoyed and deeply moved by the outpouring of support we received for the Aga Khan Museum’s Reignite campaign.
We may be operating under a new normal, but one great constant has always been the spirit of generosity of our supporters.
Thanks to the overwhelming support and generous contributions of 871 donors – alongside our matching donors Kumi and Abdul Pirbhai, Bayview Hospitality Group, Jim Fleck and an anonymous donor – we far exceeded our campaign target.
Together, we raised $284,995 – and surpassed our original goal of $200,000 and our stretch goal of $250,000 in the last week!

Lecture: The Persian Romance of Alexander the Great with Prof. Michael Barry
Setting out to conquer the Persian Empire in 334 BC, Alexander the Great lamented that no poet would narrate his history and adventures. Yet, more than 1,000 years later, Alexander was re-identified as "Iskandar" by Persia's two greatest epic poets: Firdausi and Nizami. Join historian and professor Dr. Michael Barry as he bridges the concepts of art, mysticism, and poetry in this 2016 talk exploring the blending of sober history with heroic tales.
