The Power List 2018: Aziz Hashim

The Operator
NRD Capital’s Aziz Hashim is an operator turned private-equity guy. But he still thinks like a restaurant guy.

“It’s really important what you leave behind,” Hashim told NRN, noting that his fund wants to responsibly set up the brands NRD
invests in to succeed in the long term. Unit economics are important to the fund.

A former franchisee of Domino’s, Popeyes and Checkers, Hashim founded NRD Capital in 2014. Unsurprisingly, he takes a hands-on approach to investments. In fact, Hashim was prepared to serve as interim CEO for NRD’s biggest and latest acquisition, Ruby Tuesday, but he only had to keep the CEO title warm.

Power List rank: No. 9

Known for: Hashim is the friend of the franchisee. In addition to being a former multi-unit operator, he was the chairman of the International Franchise Association.

Power move: This summer NRD closed on its second fund of $104 million. In December, the fund acquired struggling Ruby Tuesday. NRD paid $335 million to take Ruby Tuesday private. The brand named former Au Bon Pain CEO Ray Blanchette to the CEO role this month.

What’s next: Hashim and Blanchette will need to reverse the casual-dining chain’s trend of declining traffic and same-store sales.

1972 Ugandan Refugees: An Honourable Place in Canada

A look back at the first group of non-European refugees to call Canada home- Uganda's Ismaili Asians.

Not long after Ugandan leader Idi Amin came to power in 1971, he said he had a dream that Allah had told him to expel people of Asian descent from the country. Many of them were Ismailis.

The Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Nizari Ismaili branch of Islam represents about 15 million people and advocates tolerance and pluralism. When Amin's decree came, the Aga Khan called then prime minister Pierre Trudeau asking him to help. More than 7 000 Ugandan Asians came to Canada. It was the first time in Canadian history that Canada accepted a large group of non-European refugees.

Peace Hero: Mobina Jaffer, The Canadian Senator Who has been Championing Women in Peace and Security for Years

When she was 23 years old, Mobina Jaffer was forced into exile from Uganda and became a refugee. Decades later she returned to her first home as a senator of her second home. Since 2001 Mobina Jaffer has represented the province of British Columbia in the Canadian Senate. She is also the Senate’s first Muslim, first African-born and first senator of South Asian descent.

Since her appointment in 2001, she has been a steadfast champion of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, often a reminder to the world that in 2000 Canada had been a leading voice in the UN Security Council and a pioneer on the global stage.

To commemorate International Women’s Day, ICAN’s Peace Heroes series honors Senator Jaffer, whose life and career capture the spirit and essence of the day. Aya Nader spoke to her about her experiences as a female envoy and mediator and her persistent struggle to ensure women’s participation in peacemaking and security issues.

You were one of the earliest supporters of the WPS agenda, and particularly committed to elevating the voice of women peacebuilders – even during the years that the Canadian government was less engaged – what motivated you to keep the light burning?

Journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown gives a personal account of her life in the country where she was born and calls for a more honest assessment of what actually took place before, during and after the turbulent years of General Amin's regime. The romantic story of the all-conquering Asian families being thrown out of Uganda on the whim of a an evil dictator was not all that it seemed. The mass murder of Amin's own people is largely forgotten. One of the reasons Amin gave for the expulsion was that Ugandan Asians had consistently exploited the local economy and refused to integrate with black African people- after decades of living in the country. And according to Yasmin, this is the uncomfortable truth. East African Asians were part of the British Empire and loyal to it. Even after Uganda gained independence on October 9, 1962, Asians were slow to change their ways and embrace the new order. Many continued to hold racist views about black Ugandans and were racist towards them. The black Ugandans in turn, resented them and saw them as symbols of colonial oppression-which is why their expulsion was so popular among them. But hundreds of thousands of black Ugandans were killed by Amin too or were forced into exile. Only a handful of Asians were ever killed. Yasmin returns to Uganda to gauge the extent to which black suffering has been disregarded by history, and talks to those who witnessed it and the descendants of those who lost their lives. The programme examines the reaction of native Ugandans to the expulsion, the relationship between Asians and black Ugandans before the expulsion, what happened after the Asians left and after Amin's regime fell.

Kellogg announces 2018 Youn Impact Scholars

The addition of 10 new Scholars brings the network to 50 alumni changemakers

Excerpt:

Scholar Alykhan Kaba ’18 hopes the shared conversations, resources and ideas that develop from such an esteemed community of thought leaders will help him think about his social impact goals in new and exciting ways. Using media and entertainment as a platform for social advocacy, Kaba is working to build both industries in post-conflict zones as a vehicle for social and economic development. One example is his work managing Kabul Dreams, the first rock band from Afghanistan. The band serves as a voice for Afghans fighting radical ideologies and a cultural bridge between Afghans, Muslims and Americans.

“Most of the interactions I have with people in the entertainment industry are about how to run a profitable media business, not how to run a media business that impacts people’s lives,” Kaba says. “I applied to the Youn Impact Scholars program so I could build a network of like-minded thought partners to help prepare me for the challenges I’ll face later in my career by learning from others who have pursued a path like my own.”

NURSING EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AWARD

Shahirose Premji
Associate Professor, University of Calgary, Faculty of Nursing
Adjunct Associate Professor, University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Community Health Sciences
Dr. Shahirose Premji’s is one of the leading researchers on preterm infants and her research has improved nursing care not only in Canada, but in many parts of the world.

Among preterm infants, the majority of literature is devoted to health research on preterm infants less than 32 weeks’ gestation age. This is of interest because nearly three quarters of the preterm population is among 34-36 weeks or late preterm infants. Premji’s research addresses a large void explaining the unique and vital responsibility nurses share in promoting a safe discharge and healthy transition to parenthood for parents of LPIs.

25 Most Influential American Muslims

Eboo Patel: The bridge builder

Growing up in suburban Chicago, Eboo Patel dutifully attended worship services with his family. “But the real religion in our family was American achievement,” he says. That meant good grades, prestigious internships and, eventually, a lucrative career. But after earning a doctorate from Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship, Patel told his family he wanted to try public service. Fifteen years later, Patel says his Interfaith Youth Core is one of the largest inter-religious organizations in North America, with an $8.5 million budget and 45-person staff who train thousands of students on nearly 500 college campuses. The author of three books, Patel was also a member of President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.

Euless should celebrate its council's new diversity

Voters in Euless have rejected the hurtful and counter-productive race-baiting that swirled around the city council candidacy of 38-year-old attorney Salman Bhojani.

Now, as Bhojani prepares to be sworn in, the citizens of Euless need to demand that the divisive insinuations stop.

On Saturday, Bhojani narrowly defeated Molly Maddux to win the Place 6 seat, but the comments and innuendo he and his family endured during the campaign were sadly xenophobic, bigoted and not in keeping with American values of inclusion.

Beyond Borders

Ali Shaan Khemani

Published on Apr 25, 2018

The documentary ‘Beyond Borders’ is a true story of families who migrated to Montreal Quebec to save their lives from their own home countries. The families migrated because their states were in conflict, wars were taking place and people were dying because of the extremism.

This documentary breaks down the narratives of the families who suffered and were asked to leave their homes and be STATELESS. Canada Government welcomed them with open arms 70's 90's and now in 2017-18. Canada became a new home for them. The time move on but the dedication of institutions are still same. The community they belong to provided them support and space to keep up their livelihoods. The community institutions and the Leader invested into their lives and granted them with a better and certain future. In this documentary the families share their stories about struggles and hardships during their early migration days. This documentary climaxes the idea of diversity, acceptance, love and compassion of people within the global community.

The main crux of this documentary is ‘One Jamat’ coming together as one strong community and helping each other when in need.

The quiet hotel powerhouse

Excerpt:

Brothers Mahmood and Mehdi Khimji — the company’s founders — have made $500 million-plus NYC hotel acquisitions in the past year with a rotating cast of partners. According to real estate data firm Real Capital Analytics, the company dropped about $1 billion nationally on hotel acquisitions during that same time.

Between December 2016 and December 2017 alone, the firm bought the 600-plus-room Affinia Manhattan on Seventh Avenue in the 30s, the Royalton New York on West 44th Street, the Nyma on West 32nd and the Gansevoort Park Avenue.

The under-the-radar company is indisputably the most active hotel buyer in Manhattan today.
