Were Nizari Ismailis The Assassins?

Post by arlenebatada »

I was playing a game - "Assassins Creed" by Ubisoft. No doubt, the game was wonderful. But, then a question came in my mind- "Do Assassins really exist today?"

I researched on the internet and to my horror, I found sources claiming that Nizari Ismailis were the Assassins!! They also claim that Hasan-i Sabbah was the fonder of assassins.

Here are some of the sources: 1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassins
2) http://asianhistory.about.com/od/iran/p ... rofile.htm
3) http://www.alamut.com/subj/ideologies/a ... olAss.html
4) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nizari

What do our Ismaili sources say about Assassins? Are we actually the descendants of Assassins?

There is no truth in connecting Ismailis with Assassins or tales of Paradise narrated by Marcopolo. Such, accounts mainly narrated by enemies of ismailis of that time, have even misled western historians. Muslim history of medieval time is highly unauthentic. Many historians used to write history to fulfill the motives of the rulers. Many scholars disagree with the theory of linking ismailis with Assassins for example Bernard Lewis. You can find more details in any good ismaili history book.
