You need to read History of Egypt, this fact mentioned in history book of Egypt.
Although the Suez Canal wasn't officially completed until 1869, there is a long history of interest in connecting both the Nile River in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. It is believed that the first canal in the area was constructed between the Nile River delta and the Red Sea in the 13th Century B.C.E. During the 1,000 years following its construction, the original canal was neglected and its use finally stopped in the 8th Century.
In the 13th Century when it was built that time Ismaili Imams were rulling on Egypt, however there were total three attempts were made earlier to built Suez canal before the official credit for constructing the Suez Canal given to Ferdinand de Lesseps, a French developer. Ismailis attempt was one of these four attempts and it was very successful. The only thing Fernidand De Lesseps did was made the Suez canal straight and dug out the sands from the canal but unfortunately all the credit given to him

The Great "Taj Mahal" was built during the time of Mughal dynasty, and Mughal dynasty was ended more than 150 years ago but peoples still gives credit to Mughal emperor to built a "wonder" of the world"The Great Taj Mahal"!!!

Doesn't it surprise you, to built more than 100 miles canal 700 years ago when there were no modern equipment available!!!???
