Youth and seniors alike enjoy a busy Day 3 at ANZ sorts tournament
Sydney, 26 March 2016 — Day three at the ANZ Ismaili Sports Tournament offered exciting sports action among younger athletes as well as senior members of the Jamat.
In the hotly contested soccer match between Melbourne and Sydney, Melbourne’s Samad Karim wasn’t about to miss his chance at the final. Karim, who had suffered a toe injury in his prior match, played anyway. Melbourne took home the silver, but Karim won the hearts of his teammates.
Meanwhile, elder members of the Jamat were not missing out on the fun of the games.
After a fierce day of competing against each other in lawn bowling, a large group hopped on a bus into downtown Sydney, known locally as Darling Harbour. “We had a great day and really enjoyed the city as well as the company on the bus,” declared Amynah.
The day’s action followed a lively garba celebration the previous evening. The crowd that gathered Friday night were treated to an unexpected surprise when Jamati members from northern Pakistan performed an impromptu dance.
“It was a brilliant display of our diversity as we celebrated the different cultures represented,” said one attendee. “We were so pleased to see our brothers from northern Pakistan dancing and we all enjoyed the music.”

Athletes leave Far East regional games with hope in their hearts as they look towards Dubai
Amreen Dharani
6 April 2016
As Ismailis around the world prepare for the Jubilee Games in Dubai, the Jamat of the Far East came together in November to participate in their own sports tournament, which served as a regional qualifier for the international Games.
Held in Kuala Lumpur, the Far East Sports Tournament brought together athletes from Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. An array of physically and mentally challenging sports were on offer — from badminton and table tennis, to chess and Jenga.
With participants ranging in age from 3 to 80 years old, the event offered something for every age group and ability. Youth members from the Malaysian Jamat kicked the day off with an intense but entertaining Bollywood Zumba session to warm up the athletes.
Table tennis, badminton and futsal (a form of indoor football / soccer) were held at Datuk Lee Chong Wei Sports Arena, while outdoor cricket took place at a field off site. Although the inclement weather of the monsoon season caused cricket to be called off early, inside the sports arena badminton players faced off on one side of the hall, while the table tennis competition was in full swing at the other end.
For doubles events in table tennis and badminton, players from different regions were randomly paired together. Each pair had to trust one another and work their talents harmoniously in order to prevail.
“The Far East Sports Tournament has always offered a great platform to meet and connect with the brothers and sisters of other Far East Jamats,” says Danny Amin of Thailand, who won the champion’s trophy in table tennis. “I consider myself extremely fortunate for the opportunity afforded to me.”
Promoting the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle, the Health Portfolio of the Ismaili Council for the Far East was offering the Jamat blood pressure tests and sugar level checks. They were also providing information on health risks and non-communicable diseases that are common in the South Asian community, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
The day came to a close with an award ceremony that exhibited the enthusiasm, pride, and honour experienced by each country at the tournament. Despite having a team of only two athletes, Sri Lanka surprised by taking the most trophies in badminton, showing that talent and determination count for more than team size.
“I'm extremely excited and can't wait for the [Jubilee Games] to begin,” said Azmin Sadruddin, the Far East regional coordinator for the Games. “We have a few very strong athletes who will be representing the Far East from our region.”
Athletes from all countries departed with smiles on their faces and hope in their hearts as they look towards Dubai.

The Tanzanian Jamat launched their Fanous Roadshow at a Mwanza sports event, where athletes from the neighbouring Kenyan Jamat joined them for a friendly three-day volleyball and throwball tournament. It was an opportunity for all to taste the competition awaiting them in Dubai.
When they arrived in Mwanza, the Kenyans — who had launched their own Fanous Roadshow only days prior — presented themselves with their national flag and Fanous in hand!
During a touching ceremony held at Mwanza Jamatkhana in the evening, Team Kenya Captain Nooramyn Esmail presented the lit Kenyan Fanous to the President of the Ismaili Council for Western Tanzania, Altaf Hirani. The President then used the Kenyan Fanous to to symbolically light the Tanzanian Fanous, affirming the unity of Ismailis in the two countries and around the world.
Athletes and other members of the Jamat exchanged warm hugs, and during the course of the tournament, everybody from children to seniors enjoyed seeing the Fanous and taking family photos and selfies with it. The next day, the Jamat came together to create a human formation of the Jubilee Games emblem, which was captured from the sky using a drone camera.

India Jamat stands up for its champion athletes
Anisa Virji
9 June 2016
The 109 athletes who will represent India at the 2016 Jubilee Games in Dubai were presented at a lively ceremony held in Mumbai in May. They were received by an enthusiastic, cheering Jamat.
“One Team, One Spirit.”
Those were the words emblazoned on the white t-shirts of the energetic young Ismailis who were led on stage by a stately marching band — twirling batons, clashing cymbals and beating drums, under a sky lit up with fireworks.

In the embrace of the elegant white Dahisar Jamatkhana dressed in green lights, it was with such pomp and ceremony that the Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board for India presented the athletes chosen to represent the country at the 2016 Jubilee Games in Dubai.
The length and breadth of the country had been scoured in search of the most talented young Ismailis, imbued with a spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork and determination. And at the ceremony on 15 May, the India Jamat — roaring with pride — met a team of 109 athletes that epitomised those values, who would represent the country in 12 sports at the Jubilee Games.
“You will be carrying with you the dreams of every Indian Ismaili,” said Zeenat Lakhani, Chairman of the Aga Khan Youth and Sports Board in her address to the athletes. “If you fall, we will bruise; when you hit a masterstroke, we will feel like winners.”
“And when you represent India at the Jubilee Games in Dubai, the eyes and hopes of all of us here will be pinned on you.”
Amidst the footballers, cricketers, wrestlers, tennis players and champions of many sports, the crowd was introduced to a young runner who had consistently broken the record set at the Golden Jubilee Games in 2008. They also heard the story of an Ismaili hailing from a remote village, who without any training or resources has been recognised by the army for his extraordinary speed. India will certainly be keeping an eye out for him in Dubai!
Munir Merchant, Vice-President of the Ismaili Council for India, lit the Jubilee Games Fanous. Its light cast upon the athletes as each ascended the stage to sign a personal pledge on the wall.
“It’s hard to beat someone who never gives up,” scribed one athlete. “Nobody said it was easy,” wrote another. And “I pledge to give my 100% and make India proud.”
Profiles of the athletes were displayed on large screens as they ran down the aisles, bathing in the enthusiasm of the Dahisar Jamat. The Jamati leaders of western India and north Mumbai were also present.
AKYSB Honorary Secretary Nazim Hamid reminded the crowd of the vision and mission of the Jubilee Games, and encouraged them to travel to Dubai to participate in the events, serve as volunteers, cheer on the athletes, and mix with others in the global Jamat. Similar events have been planned elsewhere in India to introduce the athletes in every region of the country, and encourage the Indian Jamat to celebrate the 2016 Jubilee Games with great fervour.
“Know this,” AKYSB Chairman Zeenat Lakhani told the athletes. “The entire India Jamat will be cheering for you, supporting you and waiting for you to return home victorious!”

The Ismaili Jubilee Games’ Lantern Roadshow Comes to the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby
The Ismaili Jubilee Games’ lantern, known as the Fanous, was welcomed at the historic Ismaili Centre in Burnaby, in the Province of British Columbia (BC), on June 17, 2016, in a beautiful ceremony at dusk, after the completion of the Friday religious ceremonies. The perimeter of the magnificent Ismaili Centre courtyard formed the short relay route, as some of the competing athletes carried the lantern to the centre of the courtyard, where the Mukhi of the Darkhana jamatkhana then, in a symbolic gesture on behalf of all the Ismailis of Canada, placed the lantern on top of a special platform. Hundreds of jamati members later took to the stage to take photographs with the lantern so that they could have keepsake memories for a cherished historical moment in their lives.
The inaugural Jubilee Games were held in 2008 in Kenya as an international Ismaili celebration to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan. This year’s Jubilee Games in Dubai beginning on July 22, 2016, are being held in advance of the 2017 Diamond Jubilee celebration of His Highness the Aga Khan, Mawlana Hazar Imam, which will commence on July 11, 2017. It is Mawlana Hazar Imam’s wish that international sporting festivals should become a regular feature in the Jamat’s calendar. The number of athletes for the 2016 Games is expected to double from 2008, from just over 1,200 to more than 2000. Canada will be represented by more than 500 athletes, with the BC Province providing 79 outstanding individuals in numerous sporting events.
The lantern roadshow, after its debut at the Darkhana jamatkhana and Ismaili Centre on June 17, was welcomed at the Burnaby Lake jamatkhana on June 18, and will reach the following jamatkhanas over the next few days: Headquarters (Sunday, June 19), Richmond (June 20), Tri-City (June 21), Fraser Valley (June 22) and Downtown (June 23).

A “Must See” Video of Pure Joy: Ismaili Jubilee Games Lantern Travels Across Pakistan Amid Scenes of Jubilation and Heightened Interest in Games to be Held in Dubai
simergphotos.com/2016/07/01/a-must-see-video-of-pure-joy-ismaili-jubilee-games-lantern-travels-across-pakistan-amid-scenes-of-jubilation-and-heightened-interest-in-games-to-be-held-in-dubai/
From some of the densest urban areas to the remotest corners of this earth, the fanous or lantern of the second Ismaili Jubilee Games has been welcomed worldwide by hundreds of thousands of Ismailis with deep joy, and has generated an immense amount of interest for the games that will commence in Dubai on July 22, 2016.
Over 2,000 Ismaili athletes from around the world will be participating in the Games, with thousands more travelling from different parts of the world to lend support to athletes from their respective countries. The games are in keeping with the wish of Mawlana Hazar Imam, His Highness the Aga Khan, the 49th Imam of Ismaili Muslims, that international sporting festivals become a regular feature within the community. The Jubilee Games will be held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, a top class facility that plays host to world-class events.
Fanous is Arabic for lamp or light. It has a special meaning particularly for Ismailis. It is said that when the Fatimid Imam-caliph Mawlana Al-Mu’izz entered the newly built city of al-Qahira (Cairo) for the first time on July 23, 969, its citizens lined the streets to greet him by holding lanterns made of palm leaves and animal skins. Thus, the modern games fanous is a symbol for Ismailis everywhere to support excellence in sports that athletes will be striving for, to become the best in what they can do.
The lantern was on the top of Africa last month – it scaled the summit of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest mountain and is 19,360 feet. On June 17, 2016, it was welcomed at the Ismaili Centre in Burnaby, Canada, in front of a very large crowd and thereafter visited numerous jamatkhanas in the Vancouver area. Almost 200 Ismaili children in the Vancouver area also got an opportunity to welcome and hold the lantern on June 19, 2016 at their annual soccer camp.
One of the most astonishing receptions for the lantern, as it travelled around the globe, was in Pakistan. The short video clip is a testimony to how a symbol from Ismaili history dating back a 1,000 years has played such a significant role in heightening an awareness and interest for the games that in turn will deeply inspire the athletes to be the best they can at the week long Ismaili Jubilee Games.

"Yesterday, I visited the magnificent new Aga Khan educational institution. I was shown enough of its work to convince me that this school compared with the finest in the world. One event which I witnessed was a boxing match between two Ismaili boys -- one African, one Asian. I saw a good fight and at the end I think each of them thought he had won. Perhaps both were right!
To me, this friendly contest reflected something of tremendous importance to our community. It reflected first the qualities of determination and endurance which are demanded by our faith. These qualities are also necessary to the future leaders of the community and for the country as a whole."

Over the past several weeks, Ismailis across Canada were brought together by the Jubilee Games Fanous, and in a few day’s time over 330 athletes and coaching staff from Canada will take in its glow in Dubai together with their brothers and sisters from around the world.
The Global Fanous Roadshow kindled excitement as it travelled from coast to coast. Large crowds gathered at stops in each region, including almost 5,000 people at the Aga Khan Park in Toronto, who took in the relay, cultural performances and introductions to local Team Canada athletes. Those who weren’t able to attend in person watched at their local Jamatkhanas via live webcast.
In a video message recorded at the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, Ismaili Council for Canada President Malik Talib offered the national team words of encouragement. He also reminded them to look beyond the competition, to the greater opportunity of strengthening bonds with Ismailis around the world.
“Remember you are playing with your family,” said President Talib. “Bigger than the gold medal will be winning the hearts of our brothers and sisters worldwide.”
