What Imam of Ismaili Muslim says
Question: Your grandfather abolished the veil. Was it a revolutionary step when it did?
Aga Khan: "It was a bold step, but more social than religious. Originally, the veil had nothing to do with Islam and the veil was worn in pre-Islamic Arabia. The veil was, initially, what distinguished a free woman of a slave. The slave woman, who was not wearing a veil, could be bought or exchanged. The woman wearing the veil was not at the disposal of society. The veil has become, not a symbol but a folklore."
