YAM all! I need to find out what the orgin is for the salutation given to Prophet Muhammed i.e S.A.A.W and/or Peace be upon him. Does S.A.A.W mean Sallallaahu Alaehe Wa Alihi Sallam? or simply Sallallaahu Alaehe Wa Sallam? (Notice the use of 'Ali' in the first one).

My understanding is that it is an expression of respect for the Prophet which means "May the blessings of God be upon him and upon him be peace". We would say the same with the mention of any Imams or Prophets.

It is Alayhi meaning "upon him" and not Alihi.

In my opinion, according to the Shia Tariqah, when the name of Prophet Muhammed is mentioned or written, we are to respect him and invoke the following statement of peace upon him: SALLALLAHU 'ALAIHI WA AHLAYHI WA-SALLAM (S.A.A.W) which means "May the blessings and the peace of Allah be upon him (Muhammad) and his Progeny" The Shia addendum is WA AHLAYHI , or "and his Progeny", which according to Shia tariqah encompasses the concept of Immamah (A fundamental tenent of the Shia Tariqah) Therefore, when members of the Shia Tariqah invoke the name of the Holy Prophet, we must say SALLALLAHU 'ALAIHI WA AHLAYHI WA-SALLAM (S.A.A.W), and not "Salla Allahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam" (S.A.W). Any thoughts/disagreement?
