AKDN transforms the Aga Khan hospital in Dar es Salam from a 70-bed facility to a leading 170- bed tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital.
Aga Khan Health Service has undertaken a sizeable expansion of its hospital in Dar es Salaam, recently completing a Phase II US $83.5 million expansion (Tzs 192 billion) that will serve over one million patients in the country each year. The expansion, which was funded through a grant from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), transforms the hospital from a 70-bed facility to a leading 170- bed tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital. The hospital will now serve as an integrated health care medical facility for the country and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa. The Phase II expansion also includes an expansion of 35 outreach health centres throughout the country, 23 of which are already operational.
A Century of Experience
AKDN transforms the Aga Khan hospital in Dar es Salam from a 70-bed facility to a leading 170- bed tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital- The ExchangeAga Khan Health Service, Tanzania (AKHST) established its first health centre in Dar es Salaam over 90 years ago and has since, steadily enhanced its service offerings to become one of the leading state-of-the-art hospitals in the region. Building on the legacy of AKDN – the Network founded by His Highness the Aga Khan- , its hospitals in Dar es Salaam, as well as Mombasa and Kisumu in Kenya reach over 600,000 patients across East Africa and the larger African continent.
AKDN operates one of the largest non-profit private healthcare systems in the developing world, with 17 hospitals and over 450 other health facilities providing quality health care to over 5 million people annually. These include 14 ISO-certified and three JCI-accredited hospitals in recognition of meeting international quality standards in health delivery and hospital care.
Aga Khan in Kenya: A network of initiatives touching all aspects of East African economies
With a network of health facilities in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, AKDN hospitals and centers, which are run and managed by Aga Khan Health Services are renowned as a preferred destination for modern healthcare, attracting patients beyond the East African region. Today, the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam – part of a global chain of hospitals – is undergoing rapid expansion as it moves to position itself as a remedy for the increasing number of patients seeking specialized care abroad.
Cutting Edge Health Technology
The Aga Khan Hospitals known worldwide for their cutting-edge technology and modern healthcare are consolidating their foothold in East Africa with sustained modernization in both infrastructure, as well as equipment.
Through improvements in its human resource base and training facilities, the Hospital hopes to have a significant impact on the overall quality of health care in Tanzania. Along with more traditional services, such as family medicine, child and maternal care, the development of new specialist programmes in cardiology, oncology and neurosciences will assist in addressing the high increase in mortality caused by chronic diseases, both in Tanzania and across sub- Saharan Africa.
Expansion of the Phase II building at AKHST includes not only structural expansion with an upsurge in its footprint in terms of bed capacity, more operating rooms, more intensive care facilities and top-quality VIP rooms, but also robust strengthening of existing clinical services. In addition to excellent diagnostic services such as cardiac catheterisation and nuclear medicine, the Hospital now offers over 30 clinical specialties and subspecialties, including Cardiology, Oncology, Family Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Gynaecology, Nephrology, Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Neonatology.
Aga Khan Foundation , Amref partner to improve East Africa’s health systems
Furthermore, state-of-the-art technologies including pictorial archiving and communication systems (PACS), a radiology information system (RIS), pneumatic tubes transport system and centralized patient monitoring computer systems have also been introduced, all to support the Hospital’s overarching goal of improving the quality of care.
AKDN transforms the Aga Khan hospital in Dar es Salam from a 70-bed facility to a leading 170- bed tertiary care, referral and teaching hospital- The Exchange
This is the first and only full-fledged PACS and RIS system in Tanzania, as well as within the global AKHS network, to supports its overall goal of improving quality of care and enhanced patient-centered care. Installation of PACS and RIS has been highly innovative and has already offered several advantages – the most immediate and tangible of which has been a 20 percent reduction in stationary cost.
At AKHST, the pneumatic tube system ensures fast, spontaneous and safe transport of specimens to the laboratory from all over the hospital, as well as the transport of medicines from pharmacy to all inpatient areas. This rapid transport system is complemented with computer software, such as laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for laboratory results reports and computerised physicians order entry for sending medication orders and treatment instructions to pharmacy electronically.
Aga Khan: Bridging the Divide, Embracing One and All
This has led to reduction of time patients spend in the hospital without loss in quality of care, reduction in staff costs for hiring porters and at the same time increased efficiencies.
Reaching deeper into the community
The Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam also offers a continuum of care coordinated across its Primary Medical Centres throughout the country, including Dodoma, Iringa, Mbeya, Morogoro, and Mwanza, as well as Outreach Health Centres in Arusha, Dar es Salaam’s Mbezi Beach, City Centre, Masaki, Mikocheni and Tandika and Buzuruga in Mwanza.
At each level of care the focus is on providing services that are needed and wanted by the community whilst building linkages within the system while at the same time significantly raising local standards.
Building Capacity
The Hospital also serves as the training site for the Aga Khan University Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery leading to a Master of Medicine degree. In addition, it is the only private hospital to provide Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children accredited internships for medical and pharmacy graduates.

Aga Khan Building Capacity For E. Africa Healthcare Professionals
Aga Khan Postgraduate Program Takes More Than 60 Interns Every Year

in Tanzania
here is need for capacity building Tanzania health sector to increase the number of healthcare practitioners as well as the quality of medical equipment and facilities as well. Short of increasing and improving the number of healthcare providers, then the country will continue to suffer grave loss of manpower due to pervasiveness of otherwise treatable diseases.
The government of Tanzania is very cautious of this danger and is taking strategic steps to face it, among them been, inviting the private sector to invest in the health sector. In this regard, the Aga Khan Hospital and Aga Khan University has been conducting an internship program for almost a decade now.
Since the first batch of four medical interns were enrolled back in 2010, the demand for the internship space within the Aga Khan Hospital has more than tripled. Now the program has 64 medical residents and takes in 60 interns each year from across Africa.
There are currently 62 interns comprising of; 22 medical interns, eight pharmacy, 18 nurses, 13 laboratory technician interns and one radiology intern. The increase of interns went hand in hand with expansion of training space, services and human resources.
This expansion is part of the just completed Phase 2 project that comprised of building an entire new wing that was launched on 9th 2019 by the Tanzania Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa and Tanzania’s Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children Hon. Ummy Mwalimu.
The two top government officials were hosted by Her Highness Princess Zahra Aga Khan who was there on behalf of her father His Highness the Aga Khan. The government recognized the contribution that the expansion brings to healthcare delivery inn the country and beyond.
With completion of the USD 83.5 million wing, the hospital will now serve over one million patients each year, a great stride in providing affordable and quality healthcare to Tanzanians and the entire East and Central Africa.
Becoming A Dr (MA): Aga Khan Nurturing Health Care Providers
At Aga Khan, the postgraduate training programs are matched up with the Family Medicine program which helps integrate internship training at the Aga khan hospital with the Aga Khan University postgraduate training and the Continuing Medical Education.
This means that the interns not only get hands on experience, ‘but are nurtured to become holistic clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and lab techs.’
From internship, the future doctors start residency (Specialization) and complete their Masters programs. While others go for sub-specialization, many come back and join the Aga Khan Hospital. With the expansion of the PGME programs more opportunities for training are now available.
Currently there are alumni furthering their studies in Kenya, Lesotho and South Africa amongst other countries.
‘Thus it is clear with proper mentorship, adequate resources and conducive learning environment young professionals from Tanzania can compete equally in global stage.’
Aga Khan hospital has state of the art technology and first class professionals who act as role model for the young doctors. Furthermore, Aga Khan is the first and the only JCIA accredited hospital in Tanzania and among the top ten in Africa.
‘This combination of high end technology, top notch professional and world quality recognition makes the Aga Khan Hospital a much sort after internship placement site.’
The tertiary teaching hospital status means that the interns who train at the Aga Khan Hospital are able to study or work anywhere in the world.

Aga Khan Hospital opens Sh9.3bn facility in Dar es Salaam
Wednesday March 13 2019
In Summary
The facility will enable patients across Tanzania to access affordable and quality healthcare at their doorstep.
By NASIBO KABALE
The Aga Khan Development Network (AFDN) last weekend opened phase two expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which is expected to provide services to over one million patients annually.
The facility, first opened in 1964, was expanded from a 32 bed facility to a 74 bed hospital in 2000. The second phase expansion cost $92.5 million (about Sh9.3 billion) with a 170- bed tertiary and teaching hospital.
Funding for the hospital's growth was in the form of a 70 percent long term concessionary loan from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and 30 percent was sourced as a grant from the Aga Khan Development Network.
The second phase of the health facility is expected to provide advance clinical programmes in cardiology, oncology, neuro sciences, critical care and maternal and child health.
Speaking during the opening, Princess Zahra Aga Khan said it will enable patients across Tanzania to access affordable and quality healthcare at their doorstep.
“We are delighted to have constructed this facility and expand the Aga Khan Hospital. However, the real value of the project lies in its clinical programme which will supplement the government of Tanzania’s and work with the health public system in developing a robust capacity that will see many Tanzanians receive advanced training in the institution,” she said.
Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said Dar es Salaam was closer to reaching its target of a total of 2,500 beds— thanks to the expansion and that the facility would also help in reversing medical tourism in the country.
“Congestion and lack of technological advances have been the biggest contributor to medical tourism in the country and so we hope that Aga Khan Hospital Tanzania can cure this,” he said.

“Congestion and lack of technological advances have been the biggest contributor to medical tourism in the country and so we hope that Aga Khan Hospital Tanzania can cure this,” he said.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan receives prestigious Asia Society Texas Center’s Huffington Award
Recognised for her outstanding contributions to uplift lives around the world.
Houston, Texas, 10 October 2019 - Princess Zahra Aga Khan, daughter of His Highness the Aga Khan (Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims), today received Asia Society Texas Center’s Huffington Award in Houston, Texas. The award is the highest honour bestowed by the Texas Center recognising leaders who are a major force on the international stage. Princess Zahra Aga Khan was honoured for her outstanding contributions that have furthered international understanding, uplifted lives, and advanced health and education through her work with the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
“We were so humbled to honour Princess Zahra, and it was an inspiration to hear about the many projects in healthcare and education that she and the Aga Khan Development Network have spearheaded globally,” said Bonna Kol, President of Asia Society Texas Center. “Through her work, Princess Zahra is building hope and trust in a world where both are greatly needed.”
The award dinner began with opening remarks by Y. Ping Sun, Asia Society Texas Center’s Vice Chair and First Lady of Rice University and Bonna Kol, President, Asia Society Texas Center. Dinner was followed by a musical performance by the Aga Khan Master Musicians of the Aga Khan Music Initiative, Homayoun Sakhi and Abbos Kosimov, who were joined by tabla player Nitin Mitta.
Past award recipient, David W. Leebron, President of Rice University, introduced a short honouree video that highlighted the many accomplishments of Princess Zahra—including her tireless work to uphold human dignity, develop future leaders, and spearhead health and education initiatives in 30 countries.
Mr. Leebron then led a moderated discussion with Princess Zahra, in which they discussed the impacts and motivations of the AKDN globally. Princess Zahra spoke of the value of pluralism, she said, “Pluralism is not just tolerance, tolerating the other, it’s not just accepting that one lives in a diverse society, but it’s having an active and profound understanding of the nature and culture of one’s neighbours, so much so that one can then learn to appreciate the value that they bring to society.” Princess Zahra also spoke about the importance of values, global education, healthcare, economic opportunity and volunteerism.
In a special video presented by The Honourable James A. Baker, III and Susan Baker, Huffington Award Dinner Honorary Co-Chairs acknowledged Princess Zahra’s passion and commitment to “making the world a better place.” A formal award presentation by Nancy C. Allen, Huffington Dinner Honourary Co-Chair and Asia Society Board Member followed.
The award is named after former Ambassador Roy M. Huffington, who co-founded the Asia Society Texas Center in 1979 with former First Lady Barbara Bush. Past honourees of this prestigious award include President George H.W. Bush, and former Secretary of State James A. Baker III.

President of Rice University and past award recipient, David W. Mr Leebron then engaged in an on-stage conversation with Princess Zahra, during which they discussed the impacts and motivations of AKDN’s work. “I’m a very small link in an extremely long chain of people and institutions all working towards realising a vision which is basically my father’s vision, His Highness’ vision; and yes, it is based on the principles of Islam, but also the principles of most faiths - generosity, kindness, understanding, the spirit of volunteerism, improving the quality of life of one’s neighbours and fellow man,” said Princess Zahra.
They went on to speak about a number of topics, including healthcare, economic opportunity, and the positive results of a focus on girls’ education over the past century.
“There has always been this ethos of putting a lot of emphasis on the role of women in society and giving those women the tools and the wherewithal to be educated mothers and leaders of their societies, and I think just looking around us today the impact of that is very clear.”
Princess Zahra also discussed the ethic of volunteerism, saying, “the Ismaili community has always been incredibly generous and incredibly engaged in volunteering… In the AKDN there are as many volunteers as there are professional staff. I think that they are all people who have grown up from their parents and are giving onto their children this ethic, the importance of giving time and giving of oneself.”
In a conversation on the topic of education, Princess Zahra spoke of how a liberal arts education helps to encourage the development of values, saying, “It is not learning what to think, but learning how to think, and I think that’s what our education activities seek to instil… a spirit of inquiry and those values which are the basic human values of pluralism and understanding that makes the quality of life of one’s neighbour better than it is today.”
When asked about the future of our society, Princess Zahra noted “I think we are living at a time and acting at a time where there is optimism. There are things that are happening in our world in medicine, communications, and technology, which are going to have such profound impacts on not only the way we live as human beings but on the way that we interact and we learn.”
As a mark of great respect, proclamations were received from congressional leadership, the City of Sugar Land, and Mayor Sylvester Turner of the City of Houston. Mayor Turner proclaimed 10 October 2019 as Princess Zahra Aga Khan Day.

SBP to launch policy for reducing gender gap in financial inclusion
Saturday Dec 19 2020
Women’s access to financial and economic opportunities is essential for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. However, women in Pakistan are disproportionately under-served by the financial system.
This was stated by the State Bank of Pakistan, in a press release issued on Saturday.
According to the handout, only 18% percent of adult women in Pakistan have an active bank account compared with 51% men.
SBP said that in order to address the gender disparities, it has adopted a medium-term national target of 20 million active women bank accounts by 2023 under National Financial Inclusion Strategy.
The target will be achieved through the launch of a policy to reduce the gender gap in financial inclusion, titled "Banking on Equality", which aims to promote women financial inclusion in Pakistan.
The policy will introduce a gender lens within the financial sector through specific measures to bring a shift towards gender friendly business practices.
SBP to hold webinar
To initiate a national dialogue on women financial inclusion, SBP has organized a webinar titled “Consultative Launch of Banking on Equality policy: Reducing the Gender Gap in Financial Inclusion” on Monday.
The webinar aims to promote awareness of the significance of women financial inclusion and hold discussions among distinguished international thought leaders to discuss practical ways to give a boost to women financial inclusion in Pakistan.
SBP Governor, Dr Reza Baqir will host the consultative launch of the Banking on Equality policy with introductory presentation on the policy by SBP Deputy Governor Sima Kamil, and followed by a high level panel discussion around women’s financial inclusion.
The panel members would include Princess Zahra Aga Khan Director Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), Ceyla Pazarbasioglu from IMF and Dr Reza Baqir Governor, State Bank of Pakistan while Dr Anita Zaidi from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) will moderate the panel discussion.

I am always happy that the government takes care of its citizens! I think the Aga Khan Hospital is really a good example in improving the well-being of the citizens of Tarzania who need good medical care. I believe that the level of health care should constantly change depending on the needs of people! I have been a member of the weareecs.co.uk/social-research-insight-10 community for 5 years and I am very proud of the actions of this organization. To be honest, I am very happy that I have the opportunity to improve social and health services with my ideas. I've noticed that it's working together that can change the world around us. Every person has a voice that needs to be heard!

As the burden of cancer grows around the world, it exerts a heavy physical, emotional and financial strain on individuals, families and health services.
Developing countries are least prepared to manage this – many patients lack access to quality diagnosis and treatment. In countries with strong health systems, however, cancer-related survival rates are improving due to early detection and quality treatment and care.
In an effort to strengthen the health system in Tanzania, the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam launched a state-of-the-art cancer care centre this week, for which the foundation stone was laid by Princess Zahra and Honourable Ummy Ally Mwalimu, Minister of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania.
The new centre is valued at US$ 107.5 million and expected to open in 2024. A considerable portion of cancer patients who currently cannot afford treatment will be able to secure welfare support to treat the disease.
“We know that non-communicable diseases, including cancer, affect us all,” said Honourable Minister Ummy Ally Mwalimu in her remarks at the event. “We all know people whose lives have been cut short by cancer. It also causes significant losses to the nation because the disease reduces the workforce…”
The project aims to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza. It will provide 1.7 million people with better screening, early diagnosis and quality treatment. The centre will also support cancer care services in 100 public primary-care facilities in the region.
For more than a century, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) has been contributing to poverty alleviation, education, health care, economic development and cultural restoration in Tanzania. Through the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS), it has worked in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health for many years, in the areas of health service delivery, maternal child and newborn health, capacity building and now cancer care.
The Network contributes to and positively impacts the health of over a million people in the country every year.
“AKHS Tanzania’s continued growth over nine decades is a strong testimony of our commitment to health care and development in this country,” said Princess Zahra. “Today, AKHS facilities are known for their high level of ethical practices, innovation and provision of quality, safe and evidence-based care.”
The cancer centre will serve as a key hub for the innovative Tanzania Comprehensive Cancer Project, a public-private initiative funded by Agence Française de Développement and the Aga Khan Foundation. The Project brings together key health institutions to promote cancer care of international standards in Tanzania.
All cancers can be treated, and many can be prevented or cured. According to the World Health Organization, comprehensive treatment is available in more than 90 percent of high-income countries but less than 15 percent of low-income ones.
The new centre launched this week intends to tackle this gap, as part of AKDN’s aim to bring quality cancer care to countries for which, until now, it had been out of reach.

Princess Zahra, karibu Zanzibar tena. It is an honour having you back in this short while.
We gather here today to celebrate a momentous occasion, the official opening of the Aga Khan Polyclinic in Stone Town, Zanzibar. I express my deep appreciation to His Highness the Aga Khan, Princess Zahra Aga Khan, and the Aga Khan Development Network for their exceptional commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of the communities worldwide and Zanzibar in particular.
Princess Zahra, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Zanzibar is very committed to ensuring the best health outcomes of all its citizens. The government recognises the importance of access to quality healthcare services and is committed to strengthening the provision of such services at all levels of the healthcare system. I take this opportunity to thank the healthcare workers of Zanzibar for their tireless efforts in providing essential healthcare services to the people of this beautiful island.
Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Ladies and Gentlemen,
The healthcare sector in Zanzibar has been undergoing a massive transformation, resulting in an improved health system at all levels which include primary, secondary and referral health services with a network of 172 primary health care units distributed among the island's 11 districts and providing health services to approximately 1.8 million residents. We are currently developing ten new district hospitals and one regional hospital – the Nyumba Regional Hospital.
The Nyumba Regional Hospital, comprising of 200 beds, is the single largest health investment in this country. Our total investment in health care in this administration so far is over 100 billion Tanzanian shillings or approximately 42 million US dollars.
In line with constructing the plan for 2021 to 2025, the government is working to expand the capacity and quality of healthcare facilities to improve public health service delivery. Our key priorities are improving the provision and delivery of quality reproductive, maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent health services, as well as ensuring the availability of qualified and specialised human resource.
In addition, we are also working towards the availability of digital healthcare systems.
The Government also acknowledges and recognises the growing and important role of the private investors that invest in health services to combat diseases and improve healthcare services.
Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Ladies and Gentlemen,
We recognise and value the relationship of the Government of Zanzibar with the Aga Khan Development Network which extends over 100 years.
The Aga Khan Development Network has been contributing to poverty alleviation, education, health care, economic development and cultural restoration in Tanzania both on the mainland and in Zanzibar. We welcome the Aga Khan Polyclinic as a significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure. With state of the art equipment and highly skilled healthcare professionals, this centre will provide a wide range of essential healthcare services from preventive care, emergency treatment to specialised medical care. Hence, the Polyclinic will play a vital role in contributing to significant health outcomes in Zanzibar.
I must say, I have seen it. I was reading from my speech as they wrote, but I’ve seen it. It’s a magnificent facility. I didn’t expect to see all the services that we have seen, especially the dialysis. I thought it was just a clinic, an outpatient clinic. Yes, it is, but well-equipped with modern facilities.
I am very grateful for this unit, as not only will it impact on our community, but also with our tourists that are coming. It's going to bring comfort. And I think we should really talk about this more so that everybody will know that when they come to Zanzibar, they don't have to worry.
And we appreciate your investment in this Polyclinic and invite you to continue to enhance the Aga Khan Development Network presence in Zanzibar. And, I don't know, maybe start with opening an office. That would be lovely. We would be happy to welcome you to consider other investments in Zanzibar, but especially welcome your presence in areas such as economic investment, heritage and social development.
Aga Khan Development Network can also consider developing additional primary medical centres in Unguja and Pemba, training and building capacity of medical personnel, and eventually even building a secondary healthcare institution. I know this Polyclinic is liaising with the Aga Khan Hospital in Dar. But our comfort is we feel we have our own facility in Zanzibar, that will be wonderful.
Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Once again, I would like to express my deep gratitude to His Highness the Aga Khan, Princess Zahra Aga Khan and the Aga Khan Development Network and its development partners, particularly the French Development Agency, AFD, for their ongoing efforts to support the United Republic of Tanzania in implementing our national priorities. I also want to thank everyone involved in creating this incredible facility. From the talented architects who designed the building, to the skilled construction workers who renovated it while preserving its traditional and architectural heritage, to the dedicated healthcare professionals who will serve this community.
Princess Zahra, distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Before I conclude my speech, may I take this opportunity to extend a warm invitation to His Highness the Aga Khan to visit Zanzibar in the near future. Would you, Princess, kindly convey to him this message: Karibu Sana Zanzibar.
His Excellency Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar also extends his warm greetings to His Highness the Aga Khan. We would be deeply honoured to have you visit our island again.
I now have the honour and privilege to declare that the Aga Khan Polyclinic here in Stone Town, Zanzibar is officially launched. May God bless Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Thank you for your kind invitation.
