PRINCE HUSSAIN AGA KHAN ADOPTS A LION CUB AT THE NAIROBI ANIMAL ORPHANAGE
Date Published:
Sunday, February 11, 2024 - 11:00
A female lion cub rescued from Amboseli National Park nearly five months ago and currently domiciled at the KWS Nairobi Animal Orphanage was adopted by Prince Hussain Aga Khan, when he made a courtesy call to the premises on Saturday, 10th February, 2024.
Prince Hussain, a renowned conservationist whose photography was exhibited at the Sustainable Blue Economy Conference in Nairobi (2018), expressed his admiration for the dedication with which KWS protects all wildlife under its care. He spent a considerable amount of time at the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, taking photographs of the cub (named Mukami, after the vet who treated her) and other wildlife domiciled there, as well as mingling with the Animal Keepers under whose care the wildlife at the captive and rescue facilities fall. He also toured the Nairobi Safari Walk and lauded the Service for its efforts to ensure that rescued wildlife remain fit and healthy.
The prince made a donation to support the KWS Animal Adoption Programme, and pledged continued partnership for conservation efforts.
KWS acting Director - Partnership and Enterprise Captain Michael Nicholson thanked Prince Hussain for his generosity and especially for his empathy towards wildlife and their survival amid the myriad challenges which threaten their survival. Captain Nicholson acknowledged prince Hussain’s invaluable participation in shaping the future of Kenya’s wildlife, a national and international heritage. He reiterated that the Service remains committed to wildlife conservation and community participation in conservation.
The lion cub Mukami and her sibling were rescued and brought to the Nairobi Animal Orphanage in late 2023. Mukami’s sibling had suffered horrific injuries from a vulture attack in Amboseli, and regrettably succumbed to those injuries. The veterinary team at the Animal Orphanage nursed Mukami back to health, and it was touch and go for a while due to her being so young and also having an infection on her head. The team’s tireless efforts were successful and today she is a playful, happy four-month-old cub.

Prince Hussain Aga Khan's "Fragile Beauty" unites partners for conservation
Kenya · 23 February 2024 ·
Nairobi, Kenya, 23 February 2024 - The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is partnering with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and Focused on Nature (FON) – Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s conservation organisation – around the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), to take place at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi next week. The Assembly will focus on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
A focal point of engagement is Prince Hussain’s exhibition of marine photography – "Fragile Beauty" – currently on display at the Nairobi National Museum and the Aga Khan University campus in Nairobi. The collection of numerous photographs from around the world sends a clear message: below the surface of our seas and oceans exists a beauty and magic that we could forever lose if we do not act to protect and conserve them.
UNEA-6 will convene from 26 February to 1 March to chart a plan of collective environmental action; while "Fragile Beauty" will continue to run until the end of March to raise awareness of environmental issues and concerns in ocean ecologies, and to inspire an appreciation for wildlife and ignite a desire to protect it.
AKDN has been operating in Kenya for over 100 years in the sectors of health care, education, social development, economic development, financial services, industry, infrastructure, culture, tourism, media, environment and property development. Over 175 initiatives and programmes help to improve the quality of life for over seven million Kenyans annually.
The Network is committed to protecting the environment and mitigating climate change, and this agenda cuts across all programmes and initiatives globally. It is reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Accord and aims to become net zero carbon by 2030.
"Fragile Beauty" is part of Prince Hussain's work with Focused on Nature, a non-profit organisation he founded in 2014. FON's mission is to support the conservation and protection of threatened and endangered species and habitats.

Explora Launches Marine Encounters Exhibition on Explora II
October 3, 2024
Explora Journeys teamed up with Focused on Nature to launch Marine Encounters, an exclusive exhibition featuring the marine photography of Prince Hussain Aga Khan on the Explora II, according to a press release.
The exhibition is available in the Galleria d’Arte and showcases 28 limited-edition photographs, offering a visual exploration of marine life through the lens of Prince Hussain. This six-month exhibition was gifted to the MSC Foundation by Prince Hussain, photographer and founder of Focused on Nature, as part of a collaboration focused on environmental conservation, education and raising public awareness.
On September 14, the exhibition was officially opened by Explora Journeys President Anna Nash, MSC Foundation Executive Director Daniela Picco and Prince Hussain Aga Khan. Guests aboard the Explora II can purchase the photographs, with proceeds benefiting the MSC Foundation’s marine conservation efforts.
“For over 30 years, Prince Hussain Aga Khan’s photography has fostered a profound appreciation for nature and has influenced how we interact with our natural resources,” said Nash. “Our partnership with the MSC Foundation and Focused on Nature embodies a unified vision for environmental awareness and education. By leveraging our global presence at sea, this inaugural collaboration with Explora Journeys is designed to inspire action in preserving marine life and advancing marine science.”
“We are incredibly honored to partner with an exceptional artist and ocean ambassador, Prince Hussain Aga Khan, to showcase his exceptional photography on Explora II. This exhibition gives cruise guests a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of our oceans through art while also being inspired by Prince Hussain’s unwavering dedication to marine conservation and his powerful advocacy for their protection,” said Picco. “By giving the guests a chance to support our common cause, we are also building connections to our partner, the University of The Bahamas, to concretely support education in marine science for the next generation of ocean champions.”
The exhibition unveiling was part of the Naming Ceremony celebrations for the Explora II, the second ship in the MSC Group’s luxury fleet. The ship embarked on its maiden voyage on September 16 from Civitavecchia, Italy, visiting Spain, Sicily and Malta, with the exhibition on display in the Galleria d’Arte for six months.
The Marine Encounters exhibition takes guests on a journey through coral reefs and the deep ocean, highlighting the importance of coral protection. It concludes at the MSC Foundation Area, which focuses on raising environmental awareness and education onboard. Guests can support global conservation programs, and purchasing one of Prince Hussain’s limited-edition prints will directly fund a marine science scholarship at the University of The Bahamas.
“I’m very grateful and blessed to be showing my work in this beautiful space on board Explora II. My mission is to show people what’s out there – the diversity, beauty, fascinating behaviour, intelligence – to try to make them fall in love with fauna, flora and habitats,” said Prince Hussain. “At the very least encourage them to care but also highlight the terrible decline, the threats, and some of the solutions and changes we can make in our own behaviours.”
