What are the intangible aspects of their identities and how do their communities see themselves with respect to their cities and places?

Description
About a millennium ago, an unknown author in Fatimid Cairo completed a large and richly illustrated book. In the course of thirty-five chapters, this book guides the reader on a journey from the outermost cosmos and planets to Earth and its lands, islands, features and inhabitants. This treatise, known as The Book of Curiosities, was unknown to modern scholars until a remarkable manuscript copy surfaced in 2000. The manuscript turned out to be one of the most important discoveries in the history of cartography in recent decades. It is one of the greatest achievements of medieval mapmaking, and an unexpected window to the medieval Islamic view of the world.
In this talk, Yossef Rapoport will tell the story of this exceptional manuscript – how it was discovered and why it is so significant. The Book of Curiosities allows us to re-consider the development of astrology, geography and cartography in the first four centuries of Islam, including the transmission of Late Antique geography to the Islamic world, and navigational diagrams before the the introduction of the compass. The treatise also contributes to our understanding the history of global communication networks at the turn of the previous millennium. In particular, it shows the Fatimid Empire, and its capital Cairo, as a global maritime power, with tentacles spanning from the eastern Mediterranean to the Indus Valley and the East African coast.

The Aga Khan Centre: One year on
A year ago today, on 26 June 2018, the Aga Khan Centre was inaugurated by Mawlana Hazar Imam and HRH The Prince of Wales at a special ceremony in London’s thriving Knowledge Quarter. Over the past year, the design features of the building and its gardens, as well as its programme of activities, have come to represent the principles of openness, dialogue, and pluralism.
As home to the Aga Khan Foundation UK (AKF UK), the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) and The Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS), the Aga Khan Centre is a vibrant hub for education, knowledge, and cultural exchange. Since its formal opening during Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Diamond Jubilee visit to the UK last year, the Centre has hosted a number of public and private events and programmes, nurturing friendships and building new bridges of understanding about Muslim cultures and the work of the Aga Khan Development Network.
During his speech at the inauguration ceremony, Hazar Imam said, “We celebrate today a beautiful new architectural accomplishment. As we do so, we also honour those who have made this Centre possible - and the values that have inspired their work. Two of those values which deserve special mention today - the value of education as a force for cooperation and healing in our world - and the value of architecture as a source of inspiration and illumination.”
One year on and judging by the overwhelming demand for tours, the Aga Khan Centre has inspired visitors with the beauty of its design and gardens, and has become regarded as a place where knowledge and ideas are exchanged. On 21 June 2019, the Aga Khan Centre was presented with the Eastern Eye Editor’s Special Award, granted at their Arts, Culture & Theatre Awards in London. The Eastern Eye newspaper commended the institutions at the Centre, for the “spread of education, knowledge and exchange of cultural ideas,” and lauded its mission to foster better understanding in a multi-faith world.

Kate and William meet Aga Khan: Who is Aga Khan? Why are Kate and William meeting him?
KATE, DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE, and Prince William will journey to Pakistan later this month as they embark on the second royal tour in as many months. Today, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met Aga Khan, but what is the Aga Khan?

Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Pakistan on October 14 this year for their latest royal tour. The couple is following Harry and Meghan’s example in Africa last week, as they journey to the country on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Their tour will take four days but Kensington Palace has so far been tight-lipped about what the couple will do while there. Ahead of their visit, William and Kate have met with the Aga Khan.
What is the Aga Khan?
Aga Khan is a title given to the Imam (leader) of the Nizari Ismāʿīli Shias.
The Imam serves as the spiritual leader of the Ismaili branch of Shiite Islam.
The current Aga Khan is 83-year-old Prince Shah Karim al-Husseini, the 49th Imam.
The Aga Khan leads more than 15 million Ismailis within this branch.
His followers are scattered all over the world, predominantly in Pakistan, North America, Afghanistan, Africa and Europe.
The Imam role acts much like a royal dynasty, as the same family has passed down the title for the past 1,300 years.
Prince Shah Karim al-Husseini has been Aga Khan since 1957, and his appointment marked the first time in his family’s history the Imam title skipped a generation.
Why are the Duke and Duchess visiting Aga Khan?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the Aga Khan Centre in London today, where the Aga Khan himself was hosting an event showcasing Pakistan’s culture.
The couple met with Pakistani community leaders, chefs, musicians and artists and people involved in the UK and Pakistan’s business relationship.
The Aga Khan centre is the base of the Aga Khan Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to providing solutions to issues of hunger, illiteracy, poverty and ill-health in third-world countries.
Their outing comes as Meghan and Harry wrap up their latest royal tour in Africa, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stayed for a week on behalf of the British Government.
The couple reunited after a brief split on the continent, and have a packed day of activities to complete before they return to the UK.
In a final speech, Prince Harry said he’s never felt “alone” in Africa, adding: “I always feel wherever I am on this continent the community around me is enriching and provides me with the simplest things.
“As I raise my own son I want to know that what I’ve learned here, the value of community and the value of friendship, I can pass on to him.”

Mawlana Hazar Imam hosts The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the Aga Khan Centre
On a crisp autumnal morning in London’s King’s Cross, Mawlana Hazar Imam welcomed Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the Aga Khan Centre, for a special event to celebrate the culture and heritage of Pakistan, and the contributions of the Pakistani diaspora to British society.
The event was attended by prominent figures from the areas of arts and culture, business, community development, entertainment, and music from the UK and Pakistan, as well as members of the diplomatic community.
Their Royal Highnesses had an opportunity to meet with guests and individuals whose interests and engagements encompass the wide-ranging relationship between the UK and Pakistan, including members of the Pakistani diaspora making a meaningful contribution to society in the United Kingdom and beyond.
The occasion was hosted in collaboration with the High Commissioner of Pakistan to the UK, His Excellency Mohammad Nafees Zakaria. Guests at the event included the High Commissioner of the UK to Pakistan, Thomas Drew CBE, writer Shazia Mirza, conceptual artist Rasheed Araeen, MasterChef winner Saliha Mahmoud Ahmed, comedian Adil Ray, recording artist Shahid Khan, and award-winning architect Saira Hussain.
President of the Ismaili Council for the UK, Naushad Jivraj, explained that, “Today’s event celebrated the longstanding relationship between the Ismaili Imamat and the British Royal Family. It was an honour to welcome Their Royal Highnesses to the Aga Khan Centre. Today, the Ismaili community is present in various countries of the commonwealth, including the UK, where we are making a significant contribution to civil society.”
Matt Reed, CEO of the Aga Khan Foundation (UK), said “It was wonderful to be part of today’s event hosted by His Highness the Aga Khan in cooperation with His Excellency the High Commissioner of Pakistan. For over a century, AKDN has worked towards the sustained improvement of quality of life in Pakistan, through schools, health centres, civil society, and more. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were interested to learn about our work, ahead of their official visit to Pakistan later this month.”
Upon their departure from the Aga Khan Centre, the Duke and Duchess stopped to meet and converse with a group of schoolchildren, including hard-of-hearing children, from the Kings Cross Academy.
Situated in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter, the Aga Khan Centre is home to organisations that serve as bridges in building understanding about Muslim cultures and societies, and connect the public to global development issues. The building was officially opened by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam, during his Diamond Jubilee visit to the UK in June 2018.
