Ghat Paat jo Doro
In addition to what has been mentioned in Ghat Paat Jo Dago, these are some of my thoughts.
White colour symbolises peace and purity whereas green and red is more a symbol of identity. Knots symbolise connection or being attached to. The five represent the Panj Tan Paak meaning the five holy or pure ones.
The five knots convey the sense of being connected or bound to the Panj tan Paak - the ahle bait - the progeny of the Prophet and hence are under their shelter or grace.
The seven represent the seven pillars of the Shia interpretation of Islam.
Hence a white thread with 5 or 7 knots would make a statement such as.
I am bound to the principles of purity and peace through the grace or shelter of the five holy ones or through being attached to the seven pillars of Islam.
