Marriage in Dhaka: Questions‏

Post by rehana22 »

Hi,

How are you? I am an ismaili and I would like to ask you a few questions regarding getting married in Bangladesh. I e-mailed so many people and I received no reply at all so I thought to find an Ismaili website as I am sure that my fellow brothers and sisters will assist me with my query. I currently live in Canada. Here is my situation. I am getting a divorce and as soon as my divorce is granted, I would like to marry someone I know in Dhaka, whom I met a year ago while I was in Dhaka volunteering in an orphanage. I am a Canadian citizen and he is a Citizen in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We want to do the civil marriage in Dhaka and then we will do the religious marriage in Toronto with the family. What is the procedure to get married in Dhaka? What documents do we need to get married (please note that I will be divorced when I get married in Dhaka)? What are the requirements? How long does it take? Do I have to be residing in Dhaka 14 days prior to registering for marriage or can my future spouse (who resides in Dhaka) do everything from Dhaka and when I come, we can get married right away? Please advise as I can accordingly plan taking holidays from my work (in Canada) in order to go to Bangladesh and finally get married to my beloved as soon as my divorce is granted. Please help me with these questions as it is so difficult to find all the information online as I have e-mailed here and there and I received no reply. As for my future spouse, he is also finding out in Dhaka but we both want to make sure that we have solid information as we want to make sure we get all the proper information.

Thank you very much and Ya Ali Madad,

Rehana,
I don't want to disappoint or discourage you for your marriage, many congratulation to you in advance but in my opinion this forum is religious forum therefore this is not right place to ask marriage or other question.
By the way all countries has different laws and rules regarding divorce and remarriage, in some country you have to wait 6-12 months before you can remarriage some countries you don't have to wait that long.
I don't know about Bangladesh laws but it will good idea if you contact with Canadian lawyer first and then after lawyer in Dhaka and make sure how many months you have to wait for remarriage after you get divorce.

I know there are few lawyers who participate this forum on and off, if they read your question and give answer of your question then of course it will be more reliable answer.

Hi Agakhani and Shiraz,

Thank you for the replies. Shiraz, I checked the embassy website and believe me, I have been sending them e-mails and they never replied back. I even e-mailed the person responsible for the Embassy of Bangladesh in Canada (Ottawa) and didn't receive a reply. :(
Agakhani, once I get a divorce certificate, I can get remarried so that's not an issue. Basically, I just wanted to know the process such as where to go, how to register, how long we have to wait before actually getting a marriage date as I know in different countries, once you register for marriage, then they put your registration on a board for 15 days or more sometimes.
I am sorry if I have asked the wrong question on this forum. I guess I was just looking for help from my fellow brothers and sisters because I believe that us ismailies are a strong community and we help each other no matter what.

Thank you and Ya Ali Madad.

I wish I could help you in this matter but Im not a resident of bangladesh and so I dont know how they do civil marriages there !....Your only option is talking to them [bangladesh embassy] via phone and see what they have to say !

Emails wont help sister because just like our indian embassy, the people working in bangla embassy looks super lazy to me , lol.....talk to them over the phone and see where it goes !

Hi Shiraz,

Thank you so much for the reply and yes, I think you are right. The best way would be to talk to them over the phone. And yes, believe me they are lazy! Lol. Thank you once again.

Ya Ali Madad.
