PRESS RELEASE

HOSPITAL CHAIR WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

DATE OF ISSUE:

THE CHAIR of St George's Hospital in Tooting has won a prestigious award
for her services to the NHS and the public sector.

Naaz Coker, who became chair of the hospital last November, won the
Asian Woman of Achievement Award last month for her contribution to
public life - a career which spans 30 years.

Now in its fifth year, the Asian Women of Achievement Awards celebrate
the personal and professional achievements of Asian women.

Receiving her award, Mrs Coker said:
'Winning the award was a great surprise but it was wonderful to have
even been nominated.

'What's more important I think is that the awards show that Asian women
can and do make a significant contribution to the community and society
in general. And if they do nothing else, I hope the awards inspire a new
generation of Asian women to achieve and aspire.'

As well as being Chair of St George's Hospital, Naaz is also Chair of
the British Refugee Council. The first twenty years of her career were
spent in the NHS where her roles ranged from a Pharmaceutical and
Clinical Director to a General Manager in several London hospitals. This
was followed by ten years at the King's Fund, a large health foundation
in London, where she was director of their race and diversity programme.

Sir Nicholas Young, chief executive of the British Red Cross and one of
the panel members of the award scheme, said: 'Naaz is an outstanding
winner. She has given her life to public service, most notably the NHS.
She is a real bridge-builder and a great role-model for women of all
races.'
