Patience is a virtue

Post by Biryani »

Hazrat Yusuf (AS), the famous Prophet, was a son of Hazrat Yaqub (AS). He was the eleventh of twelve brothers and was incomparably beautiful, modest and possessed the highest quality of good character.

Of his sons, the father Hazrat Yaqub (AS) had deepest love for Hazrat Yousuf. For this reason the brothers became envious. At last they hatched a conspiracy and saying that they were taking Yusuf for playing, took Him out of the house. They brought Him to a deserted ground and after beating Him, threw Him into a deep well. After coming back home, they informed their father as, when we were engaged in play; a wolf grabbed Yusuf and ate Him. Since the blood stained shirt they showed was not torn, Hazrat Yaqub (AS) could not believe his sons. He was aggrieved by the lies of his sons but He did not express his anger, rather determined to be patient and said, Patience is most fitting; I am seeking help from Allah in that what you assert.

In today’s world, the general definition of the word is to tolerate delay. This implies self control and forbearance as opposed to wanting what we want when we want it. How many times have we jumped the gun and found out it would have been better to tolerate delay or had self control? What did we miss out on? Did we hurt someone we love because of lack of patience? I think having patience heals the wounds and things, after all, work out just fine. Patience is not only a virtue but a necessity for a happy existence.

Taken from Mathnavi 6: 1405 -1410.

When your body falls ill it makes you seek medicine; and if it grows strong it makes you an outrageous devil.

Know that this iniquitous(sinful) body is like a coat of mail: it serves neither for winter nor summer i.e, it is like a useless garment.

(Yet) the body is good (for you) because of the patience (which you must show in overcoming its desires), for the exercise of patience expands the heart (with spiritual peace).

The patience shown by the moon to the (dark) night keeps it illumined; the patience shown by the rose to the thorn keeps it fragrant.

The patience shown by all the prophets to the unbelievers made them the elect of God and the lords of the planetary conjunction, i.e. mighty and victorious spiritual emperors.

Thanks Biryani for posting this wonderful movie, I have send it long time ago, but I will watch it again.

Movie: Irani ba bazigarane afghanistani

Young Lateef works on a construction site in Tehran with some Kurds and a few illegal Afghan workers. When Lateef is given heavier tasks to compensate for new Afghan worker Rahmat, he resents his displacement and treats Rahmat cruelly. After one of his pranks, however, Lateef discovers Rahmat's secret--he is a girl named Baran. Latif's heart softens towards Baran and he shows his new affection for her by doing what he can to ease the hardships she suffers at work. When government inspectors force all Afghans to be fired from the site, Lateef discovers he cannot bear to be without her. Jeopardizing social standing and endangering his own well being, Lateef stops at nothing to save his love.
