Journey to Mecca

Post by Saima »

Has anyone seen the Journey to Mecca: In the Footsteps of Ibn Battuta? I was thinking of going to the IMAX, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. On the same note, I wanted to know who Ibn Battuta is. Is he linked to Ismailism in some way? Just curious.

I have seen just the trailer and it does not sound bad, what you got to lose is only few bucks and couple of hours…eh? I’m sure it would be worth that as I’ve read on web that the film makers, among them Taran Davies, were awarded the unusual permission by the authorities in Saudi Arabia, the “protectors of Mecca and Medina”, to shoot the scenes of the Hajj. There are spectacular scenes all presented in the vast screen panorama of IMAX. Some are very striking taken from air, showing the immense multitude that has congregated in their white garbs – circumambulating the sacred Ka’aba, the black cube, the House of Abraham and Ishmael. It all harks back to the foundation of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

I think Ibne Batuta was a Sunni Muslim…but during his extensive travels around the old world he may have dealt, one way or the other, with some Ismailies in his time. I find Battuta – kind of a funny name…like Qabbacha, Nasiruddin.

I’ve got an Idea for a film about someone who had traveled all the way thru central Asia, India and up to present day China from Mecca, Saudi Arabia in the ninth century...way before Ibne Battuta.

Abu Al-Mughith Husayn Ibn Mansur al-Hallaj

The name of the movie would be either" Al-Hallaj" or "The Passion of the Hallaj"...

Producer: Biryani and Mel Gibson
Director: Mel Gibson
Coming sooner or later at the selected theaters near you... :)
