The Tradition of Grams(Chana)
According to the following verse of the Ginan "Amar te aaayo more", this tradition goes back to the time of Harishchandra and Taaraa Raani.
Ejee Ghugharee maa(n)hey thi moteeddaa neepanaa eh Mo Allah
Pureeyoon tey naagar velnaa paan, hojeerey...sunneeyo bhaai.......10
The cooked grams turned into pearls, and the purees (flour fritters) turned into naagar vine leaves
Here in Canada this has been discontinued, nevertheless it would be interesting to know its significance. Being a simple food, it signifies and reminds us of the period of austerity, humility and reflection. Sometimes some bits of coconut are added to signify that behind every calamity (symbolized by cooked grams) there is mercy (symbolized by the sweetness of coconut bits).

channa Jura
There is always an esoteric background of any tradition or Kirya and normally it should be continued as it shows the object of the majalis. Now the word jura is used in our tradition.Similarly the word 'Tabaruk normally used in Majalis of non-Ismaili Muslim. Jura means a little or essence or extract (Nichor in Urdu) and it always in small quantity. If we talk of eastern or Indian tradition, the food consist of Dal or channa is considered as the inexpensive (Cheap or Sasta in Urdu) food as compared to Meat or chicken ( Gosht or Murgi). Just like we say to someone, How is your business? and he said "Dal roti mil jaati hai guzara ho jata hai".And it shows contetment and Humility. Now the main Kirya in Satada is the "TASBIH" for tauba, intense supplication, forgiveness of our wrong deeds and to remove difficulties and hurdle in both spiritual and material progress. And this will o­nly possible if o­ne should have enough humility. SO this Channa jura signifies spiritual poverty, humility and contentment which is the main acheivement or object of the Majalis
