SO KIRIAA (THE HUNDRED GOOD DEEDS) - PEER SADARDEEN

Post by faisall667 »

Okay so I am a bit confused about some of these.

28 adhaku(n) kenu(n) veeraa levu(n) naa(n)hee.

28 Do not take excessive profit in anything, o brother.

How is this bad, as long as one is humble and not proud?

37 dharatee tannu(n) mul na karie e chhe maataa,

37 Do not price the earth, for it is your mother.

So we can't buy and sell land?

50 jeev ja(n)t na maaree-e jaannee.

50 Do not knowingly kill living creatures.

So all those bugs that I killed because it may cause me harm later while I am sleeping, was wrong?

53 botteu(n) chaatteu(n) kenu(n) khaavu(n) naahee,

53 Do not eat what anyone has tasted or licked.

So, if my sister can't finish her rice or something, I should let her throw it away rather than finish it?

54 galeeatr vasatr na peravu(n) bhaaee.

54 Do not wear clothes dyed with indigo, o brother.

What's wrong with indigo? I know back in the day it was a sign of Royalty

79 naad cha(n)d na joee-e bhavaaee,

79 Do not listen to music or poetry, or watch plays.

So I can't listen to music or watch TV? In todays world it is important to watch TV for some purposes like News...also, as far as music is concerned, we have geets and are ginans have raagh and rhythm...

85 khatt darasan puje nahee(n) paame mokh,

85 He who reveres Hindu teachings does not find salvation.

I have read many posts on here that consider hindu teachings

87 hee(n)ddataa chaalataa(n) khaavu(n) naa(n)hee,

87 Do not eat while you are strolling or walking along.

Whats up with that? We live in a crazy world--we are always on the go

92 eesatree aagal guj vaat na karavee.

92 Do not speak of secrets before a woman.

Huh?

95 parabhaate phul chu(n)tte maahaa chhe paap,

95 To pick flowers in the early morning is a great sin.

What?

Please help me understand some of these kiriaas.

Thank you,

Faisal

I think when considering the applicability of information in the ginans, one has to be aware that they were formulated in a particular historical context and that some aspects may not apply today. That is the reason the Farmans of the current Imam supercede/override the ginans.

The following are my thoughts on the issues you have raised.

"28 Do not take excessive profit in anything, o brother.

How is this bad, as long as one is humble and not proud?"

I think it is merely emphasizing the vice of greed. This is mitigated if one is charitable and uses his/her wealth for beneficial purposes.

"37 Do not price the earth, for it is your mother.

So we can't buy and sell land?"

I think it is just emphasizing the sanctity of land, that it has to be treated with dignity and respect and not to abused. Recently Imams have made Farmans to get into agricultural sectors. How can that be achieved without land purchase.

"50 Do not knowingly kill living creatures.

So all those bugs that I killed because it may cause me harm later while I am sleeping, was wrong?"

I think it is meant to emphsize the sanctity of life, that all life has to be respected. Imams recently have encouraged the use of modern medicine/technology to combat diseases. It is a matter of applying judgement to each circumstance.

"53 Do not eat what anyone has tasted or licked.

So, if my sister can't finish her rice or something, I should let her throw it away rather than finish it?"

I think it is a matter of hygene. It is not unreasonable considering that today we are told not to shake hands with people to prevent getting the cold viruses.

"54 Do not wear clothes dyed with indigo, o brother.

What's wrong with indigo? I know back in the day it was a sign of Royalty "

I think the issue is with the black colour and the smell as well. There have been discussions on this subject in this forum. Go to the search button and type 'black colour" and you will get all the topics.

"79 Do not listen to music or poetry, or watch plays.

So I can't listen to music or watch TV? In todays world it is important to watch TV for some purposes like News...also, as far as music is concerned, we have geets and are ginans have raagh and rhythm... "

At the time the verses were composed, poetry and music perhaps dealt exclusively with vulgar aspects of life and hence this injuction. But today the Imams encourage good music, poetry and art in all its forms.

"85 He who reveres Hindu teachings does not find salvation.

I have read many posts on here that consider hindu teachings"

In other ginans the Pir has been more specufic about the aspects of Hindu teachings which are useless such as pilgrimage to the Ganges etc. But of course there are elements in Hinduism that are shared with our tradition which we should adopt.

"87 Do not eat while you are strolling or walking along.

Whats up with that? We live in a crazy world--we are always on the go"

It is a matter of good discipline and habit.

"92 Do not speak of secrets before a woman.

Huh?"

I think it is the issue of the cultural context. Women in those days did not participate in public life and therefore discussing secrets with them without them having the proper background may lead to confusion. Today the situation is different. Princess Zahra is one of the members of the Board of Ttustees at the AKU. How could she perform in this position without knowledge of secrets of the institution.

"95 To pick flowers in the early morning is a great sin.

What?"

I do not have an explanation but would respect the advice until I find a reason not to.

Your thoughts are always appreciated, thank you.

Faisal,

There seems to be a translation error.
Black Dye used to be made from the bark of the tree mentioned.
The word should be translated as BLACK not Indigo.

AS U HV TOLD THAT DO NOT SELL LAND(piece of land) or BUY ,

But think in contrast may be PIR is trying to tell us that DO NOT BETRAY TO UR MOTHERLAND AND BE FAITH-FUL TO UR MOTHERLAND irrespective where v r from.

it is possible that i may be wrong in this case if so plz amend .
