Imamate is an eternal institution. The 12'ers believe in that as well and, they will say "the Imam is with us even today".

Ayatollah Khomeini describes the Imam as God’s proof (Hujjah: guarantee). The Iranian constitution has the Imam to automatically become the Head of the State if he were to re-appear.

Once they use to pray for their Ghaib Imam to re-appear soon; now, they suggest that he will appear to herald the end of the world. Of course Jesus would appear at that time too.

Anyways, I found this interesting article- Knowing your Imam at a 12'er website:
some excerpts:

Imam al-Baqir (as) said: We are the most beautiful names of Allah. Allah does not accept anybody's worship unless they have the marifah of us [8.]

And the Imams (as) have said:
Through us Allah is known, and through us Allah is worshipped. [9.]

If it were not for Allah we would not be known, and if it were not for us Allah would not be known. [10.]

The Imam Jafar Sadiq (as) was asked by his companion Abu Basir about whether or not it was true that, on the day of the Resurrection, God would be visible to all: Yes, said the Imam. He is visible even before that day; he has been visible since the day when He asked: Am I not your Lord? The True Believers have seen him even in this world. Dost thou not see him? And the man replied: O my Master, I see thee. Permit that by thy authority I go and announce it to the others. But the Imam (as): No, say nothing to anyone, for the people are stupid and ignorant, they will not understand; they will disavow you and hurl anathema at you."[7.]

Can't they both be the Same? Since there is no-one but only One...
Just to apply: He is here even before this day...
As you quated [Imam Jafar Sadiq "He is visible even before that day; he has been visible since the day when He asked: Am I not your Lord?"]

I am not good in translation but in this verse Pir says If Imam not keeps His feet in this world, then the unviserse can not survive.

That is presence of Imam is necessary for this universe.

mashallah,

THANKS ,

very true & based on Quran in which Allah says that

"Allah will not destory this universe until Prophet is among people"

& we believe that imams are the wasi & leaders after Prophethood
